Michigan approves concealed weapons in schools, churches

The same day as the Newtown school shooting, Michigan passed a bill that allows the carrying of concealed weapons in previously off-limits areas, including schools.

Michigan passed a law Friday that will allow the carrying of concealed weapons in previously off-limits areas including schools, churches, day cares and sports stadiums.

The bill cleared the Senate on Thursday, and was approved by the Republican-controlled House Friday, the same day that 27 people, including 20 children, were killed by gunfire at a Connecticut school.

Another provision in the bill eliminates county-controlled concealed weapons licensing boards, having sheriffs assume their duties instead, Click On Detroit reported.

The current law in Michigan prohibited concealed weapons in schools, churches, day cares, hospitals, dorms, casinos and any public entertainment venue that had a capacity of over 2,500 people, according to Petoskey News. Violating the law earned a civil infraction and a $500 fine, as well as a six-month suspension of a concealed pistol license.

we need to have armed guards X 2 at every entrance to our schools. In addition to being armed, these guards must also be proficient in hand to hand combat. ie; Navy Seals. We are encountering far to many of these incidents, where innocent people are being killed.

That would turn a school into a combat zone of shooters shooting each other and even more innocents being shot in the cross fire. So how does the guard at the entrance know who a shooter is???? The shooter at Sandy Hook was the son of teacher. He wouldn't have been suspected. He could have walked right in...gone to his mothers class room and killed before the guards even knew what was happening. It could be an irrate parent or in the case of VA tech, a student. Even a small school has lots of rooms and you can't post someone at each room.

It is about the guns! There are a lot of sick, angry people in the world. A gun is the easiest way for them to do the most damage.

People and particularily republicans love to say that we live in he best country in the world. If we have to have armed guards in schools we will not even be close to being the best....we will be no differnet than third world country.

we have serious risk in not only our schools, but other public areas.

Sorry, I don't agree with you. I have Grand Children, who I want to see come home safe and sound from school and whatever it takes to make that happen is fine with me.

We are not a third world country because we are a nation built on slavery and genocide.

Who we are culturally was in place long ago, before most of the Native Nations in the Americas were exterminated by guns!

Who we are culturally was in place long ago, before Africans were forced into slavery by guns!

The USA is not a third world country because they are a nation built on slavery and genocide.

Guns made America "great" at killing people and stealing their land and gold. Just ask anyone in the Pine Ridge Concentration Camp.

We need a society and a culture that doesn't need armed guards anywhere. An armed guard is a non=productive person, a drain on society, a money pit whose pension and social security continue long after they are off their produce nothing job.

Previously open carry was allowed in schools. Now it is restricted to concealed carry, which requires a background check and has a higher age limit.
