You never know but I sense they will double down on their insistence that everyone be able to carry open arms where ever they go. The supporters of the new Michigan law I bet believe that what they passed did no go far enough.

it will be a really big political fight to reign in what has gone on already. The gun nuts have already won the fight to carry guns into the classroom at CSU in Fort Collins and they want the same rights at the University of Colorado.

And that's true of everything we need to take action on.

I think there's enough of a majority for actual common sense reforms, e.g. ending paperless gun sales (gun show loophole), that it finally must happen.

I threw these ideas together in about 20 minutes..... thoughts? Additions? Subtractions? We need to start pushing these ideas on our politicians and demanding changes...

1. Ban on assault weapons. Consider the word "assault." No one EVER has ANY need for these weapons. Not for defense, not for hunting.

2. Ban on gun shows. Weapons at these shows are pretty much sold no questions asked. Guns should only be allowed to be sold by a licenced dealer. Ammo too.

3. In addition to full background checks, mandatory psychiatric evaluations for anyone purchasing guns and anyone that resides at the same residence that is over the age of 18.

4. Trigger locks provided with each weapon.

5. A Government funded gun buyback program. $100 per gun. No questions asked. This would be mandatory for any weapon not registered and volentary for any legally registered weapon.

6. After the buyback program period, a mandatory 10 year Federal prison sentance for ANYONE caught with an unregistered weapon for any reason. Police would be empowered to ask for the registration of a weapon any time it is seen or any time they could reasonably believe you might have a weapon on you or in your home (such as the presence of ammunition or other firearm items).

7. Mandatory life sentance for ANY crime committed with a firearm. Stole a wallet at gunpoint? Life in prison.

8. A tax on all firearm and accessories sales to fund the creation of "smart weapon" technology. similar to the technology on a smart phone, a smart weapon could use something such as a pin code or fingerprint to only be activated by the rightful owner of the weapon, and even when activated the weapon could employ GPS technology to prevent firing in an area designated as a no firearm area, such as a school or church.

9. Impose a one firearm per person (OVER 18 only) per household limit. No person would be allowed to take more than one weapon from their home at a time (so if you owned a pistol for defense and a rifle for hunting, you can only take the rifle if you are going hunting).

The objectives here are to get illegal weapons off the streets (by imposing extremily hefty penalties coupled with incentives for turning illegal weapons in), place more hurdles into the way of purchasing weapons that a sincere gun owner could still pass, and pave the way for weapons of the future that would be safer then the one's we have today (namely by making it basically impossible to steal or illegally purchase a weapon and still be able to use it).
