Liberals are responsible for this tragedy

Posted on Saturday, December 15, 2012 9:33:39 AM by Thad Lost

In light of a tragedy like the shooting at Newton yesterday, the immediate reaction of conservatives is to mourn and offer our sympathies and prayers for the victims. The immediate reaction of liberals is to politicize the issue.

When we are engaged in a war for our freedom, we cannot allow the left simply dominate the narrative while we act as decent human beings.

There is one simple truth here. Guns were not responsible for what happened yesterday. Liberals were.

How?

The school at Newton like schools everywhere was declared “gun free” zones.

Why don’t we just put up a big sign here that says, “DEFENESLESS TARGETS IN THIS BUILDING!”

The left has succeeded in pushing gun control and the end result has been perfectly predictable. Everywhere gun control is imposed, violent crime rises. Washington DC has some of the most draconian gun control laws around. It is also racked with violent crime. Ditto Nanny State Queen Michael Bloomberg’s hellhole called New York City. Citizens are defenseless but criminals didn’t get the memo. They sill have guns.

There was a pro-gun post in GD last night that said the deaths were "just like paying taxes, they are the price of freedom." I was not too happy with the mass murder of children being compared to paying taxes to say the least, but a longtime right-leaning DUer actually posted that.

At least one parent said Lanza's mother was a substitute teacher there. But her name did not appear on a staff list. And the official said investigators were unable to establish any connection so far between her and the school.

The woman had a gun and instead of it making her safer it got her killed. If she didn't have guns in her house there is at least a chance that none of this would have happened.

for instance, in the Gafford incident...but I don't see teachers having guns as being any help in this situation.

In the Gafford incident....his gun jammed or he had to reload. There would've been time to shoot him at that time, even though the crowd had been taken by surprise. I think they ended up wrestling him to the ground and getting his gun, while he was reloading or something.

In the movie theatre, a gun in the audience might have helped. Too many people for the shooter to keep an eye on, esp since it was dark. Someone could've shot him, w/o him ever being aware what hit him. He was standing up, outlined against the light of the screen, presumably. But who knows? There are no easy answers to surprise domestic terrorism.

simulations with a few typical CCW holders to see how effective it really would have been. Obviously the presence of guns is no deterent to these folks who want to do maximum carnage.

I think the obvious solution is to limit the capability and ability to get off numerous shots at a time.

the victims will not have guns. They're not brave. They're cowards.

Even the soldier who shot his comrades knew they weren't allowed to have loaded guns in that area.

The mall shooter knew shoppers wouldn't be armed. Most people aren't.

They don't go to, say, gun shows, to kill lots of people, since they know they'd be shot dead before they had a chance to kill very many.

There's a reason that marshal's hired to sit incognito on airplanes are armed. When faced with an armed, evil person, it is most effective to have an armed person to deal with him. You're limited otherwise, as we've seen.

But in a school...it seems particularly dangerous to have loaded weapons around. They'd have to be locked up, which makes them almost useless. And the likelihood of a child getting injured by the gun w/o a shooter around is more likely than a mass murderer coming in, IMO.

But if someone wants to kill a lot of people in a free society, there's not much that can be done about it. Some gun restrictions would be helpful (and many states have some)), though, to keep the incidents down, or the # of victims down.

and do we want to live in a country where the government goes door to door to search people's homes? All the people will do is bury the guns in the backyard.

Seems to me a waiting period for purchasing would help, a ban on glocks and assault weapons, and PR against a culture of violence. Possibly control of violent video games (I really do think that desensitizes youth to violence...it objectifies people being killed). I don't see violent movies in the same way. Video games are different....young people spend hours a day, days on end, playing them. The exposure is much more, and the player takes an active part.

We can see it in the Middle East. People raised for generations in war-like environment. They become desensitized to it. It becomes a way of life. They have no idea what it's like to grow up and live in a peaceful environment; totally foreign to them.

may mean you're just unfamiliar with guns and gun owners.

You're reacting to a situation by blaming people who have done nothing to contribute to the mass killings, because of a THING that they own and, for reasons you don't understand, sometimes enjoy owning. There are gun collectors, antique and new guns, skeet shooters, hunters (a horrible hobby, IMO). These people are, by and large, different from the gun nuts you're thinking of. But your understanding is not required. Different people have different interests.

Not all gun owners are the same. I am guessing you are just unfamiliar and possibly afraid of guns. My grandpa had a gun collection. My brother has a gun collection (or at least he did, before some were stolen). I have a gun for protection. One of my sisters has a gun for protection. My ex had guns, for his horrible hunting hobby. Most gun owners respect guns for the damage they can do, and don't play around with them.

The NRA gun nuts are different.

Yes, their abuse and love of guns, support for lax gun laws, and worse, contributed to what happened yesterday. In fact, it seems clear that mom and/or dad brought Lanz up in the gun culture. And there are a lot like Mr. and Mrs. Lanz.
