More effective gun regulation alone will not save this country's soul.

There are any number of things that need to be done to better control guns but there are other things that we need to think seriously about. Certain movies have an obscene fixation on not only showing violence but lingering on the sights and sounds of the event's aftermath. Certain video games put graphically realistic weapons in the hands of players who move through various scenarios blowing people apart. Mental health funding gets slashed while banks are bailed out.
As a people we need to engage in significant introspection as to how we have got to the point that innocents are slaughtered, there is warfare on the streets of Chicago and too many domestic quarrels turn homes into killing grounds.
More stringent gun laws are necessary to alter our course, but such regulation is not sufficient. Even as we put pressure on our elected officials to fulfill their responsibility to protect this country's citizenry by banning assault weapons, close the gun show loophole and limit the size of magazines, we need to tackle this whole culture of violence.

But I think those are make believe anyway. Effective gun control might save a few lives, however -- something far more important than souls.
