The NRA supporters are all republicans, at least 90% of them. Period. They donate 85% of their money to the GOP and 15% to dems to make it look like they are unbiased.

The NRA talking point is "private sales should be allowed". I am 100% for allowing background checks on private sales.

"You can hate the NRA and still own guns."

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021998404#post114

(Slap a huge tax on ammo, gun powder etc) "...WOULD NOT stop mass shootings. Money was not a factor in the decision!!!"

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021999841

"The ONLY way to stop mass shootings is to ban all gun and gun possession. Nothing else would have prevented this weeks disaster!"

But then you go on to say that this reasonable solution would be impossible to implement - even though dozens of other countries have done exactly that.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021976703#post42

"Jesus, for the millionth damn time, what is your fucking solution to remove 300 million legal guns from gunowners in the United States. I want a real fucking answer! Not just complaining."

Just because you're to stupid to imagine it (or that the NRA doesn't allow you to), it must be impossible.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021999841#post13

"No, even if 1/2 the people died it is worth it. But they will never stop 100%."

Because no gun control is 100% effective, we can't do anything.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021999841#post14

"Many countries have a lot of guns but not our murder rate."

Very few countries actually have anywhere near the number of guns we have - and therefor don't have anywhere near the murder rate we have. And none are industrialized Western-style democracies.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021995914#post28

"Security guard also? Cop? What about carrying a baseball bat? Is that armed?"

Equating bats, knives & other non-weapon non-firearms as being exactly the same as guns is a favorite NRA rhetorical tactic.

LOL, you think the NRA said "You can hate the NRA and still own guns." LOL, really, the NRA thinks you can hate the NRA and still own guns?

OK, you also spouted "dozens of other countries have done exactly that". What other country had 300 million guns in public, and a high murder rate, and collected all of them?

You obviously didn't read the thread about the baseball bat or would would know it was about open carry and not bats.

Baldguy, you have posted so much about how I AM WRONG in saying you will never stop a lone nut.

OK, since you think this is a easy problem to solve, and seem to be so much smarter than ANYONE, we all await your solution to this problem!

But I am sure you will respond with wither some smartass comment or nothing.

goals will be realized.

I know few gun nuts that are the stereotype being used here. I do know many more people who feel that they need something to protect themselves since the cops are never there in real time and are sometimes part of the problem.

I taught firearms to mostly GLBTs. These are people who are under a much higher level of threat than most of us. It wasn't because they lived in bad neighborhoods or because of the company they kept, its just because of who they are. It sometimes follows them home. They are also the kind of people who would disarm when the threat is gone. Address those issues before you would leave them bare and vulnerable.

The real issue is the sickness of violence in our society. Weapons that some are upset about have been available to US civilians since the end of WWI, but the level of violence in our society has risen sharply. Once we address that and its root causes, self defense gun ownership will plummet leaving mostly sport shooting and hunters.

Why are so many defending gun ownership, shooting and killing?

Guns are tools to kill with.

How does that fit into a right-to-life philosophy or a Christian philosophy?

Would Jesus want to see everbody packing concealed weapons as the gun enthusiasts on this site promote?

Would Jesus want to put armed guards and metal detectors in all the schools to criminalize the students and visiting parents?

I know... Let's make sure that every sperm turns into a human being so that we can shoot the kids when they reach kindergarten age.!

I am not part of the problem, and others like me are not part of the problem. My husband is in law enforcement, we are both progressive liberals and own a small farm. We have one firearm for home protection and for potential emergencies on the farm when we may have to quickly put an animal down. We actually had to put down a sick raccoon near our home last year that was likely afflicted with distemper and suffering.

Both of us have debated other gun owners we know countless times in regards to what kinds of firearms and ammunition should and should not be available to civilians, and what needs to be done to prevent any weapon from getting into the wrong hands. I have taken lumps to the point of being called a "liberal gun grabber" and now I am hearing things like "fuck all gun owners" from anti-gun people. I have been on both ends of a gun and know very well what a huge responsibility gun-ownership is. There plenty of assholes out there who own guns...I'm not one of them.

We recognize that the individual right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans’ Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms. We can focus on effective enforcement of existing laws, especially strengthening our background check system, and we can work together to enact commonsense improvements – like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole – so that guns do not fall into the hands of those irresponsible, law-breaking few.
