so the TV news is talking about multiple gunshot victims

What happened, a mass shooting?

No, just a normal weekend for Kansas City

and St. Louis
and Baltimore
and Washington DC
and Detroit
and NYC
and Boston
and Philadelphia
and Los Angeles
and Chicago
and Atlanta
and Houston
and so on

Total victims on an average day - about 40, and those are just the fatalities.

different cities have different murder rates.

From 46.4 in Washington DC and 42.6 in Detroit and 38.1 in St. Louis down to 8.3 in Seattle and 5.6 in Boston

This is from 1999, and I am not sure what the history is of gun control laws in those various cities.

Although looking at DC and Detroit it seems like the homicide rate is proportional to the poverty rate.
