General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIs it possible to have a rational discussion without the F word?
There seems to be a pattern where posters throw out the F bomb when they disagree with a post rather than posting a coherent response to the otherwise offending post. F bombs do nothing to advance the conversation and it doesn't make one look smart or informed. If someone says something you obviously disagree with, there is no requirement that you respond. In fact, your silence is the ultimate ignore button. So can those of you who are guilty of it, cut it out.

(3,335 posts)But human nature being what it is, I see you didn't want to disappoint. Even though as you claim, it is generally accepted, (and I would disagree that it is) why do you think that this crudeness is constructive. I think it just adds to the public discourse, particularly at a time when we as a nation could use less of it.

(36,109 posts)Why have you determined that particular word erodes public discourse?

(82,383 posts)it is the most vulgar of words in our language, no? We do recognize that, and the fact that other vulgarisms are milder (damn, shit, hell)

I think there is a place for a good ole f-you, but we have made it so common place that we have ringed dry all meaning. Back in the 80s a middle finger or F-you was cause for fisticuffs. Today such insults don't even measure on the annoyance meter.

(3,335 posts)when it doesn't appear to be warranted. I personally chose to ignore the rest of the comment once I see it. I thought I'd let the offenders know just in case they didn't know that they were being offensive, and in case they may have something worth reading some day. I realize I may be a little older than most here and maybe the word has become a staple in this younger generation's vocabulary, which is why they resort back to using it since it's easier to throw out the F word rather than find another way to voice their frustration or disagreement.

(13,776 posts)that word out. I can't tell you how obnoxious it is to read the word in so many posts. It's also very, very boring - as if people's command of the English language is not sufficient to express themselves with other words.
When it's used as a noun, a verb, an adjective, an adverb, a gerund ..... you get the idea.
politicaljunkie41910
(3,335 posts)I didn't know whether they knew how offensive they are and I wanted to let them know, since I usually just ignore responses that include it. I thought I'd give them the benefit of the fact that I'm probably older than most here who use that word and let them know just in case that they really have something worthwhile to say, it shouldn't get lost or skipped over because some my age may find it offensive.
Instead the majority showed their immaturity, which just makes my point, by seeing how obnoxious they could be.

(82,383 posts)I agree with your point that it's unresponsive and uncreative. I often wonder if they comedians who use it could try to do the same act without it - would they be just as funny? Or would the same act fall flat without the fucks? who knows, none of them will try it. It seems like a short cut most of the time.
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)I don't really see as how it's made them any more responsive or creative. Others may disagree.
Lots of creative people use naughty words to great effect.
dawg
(10,624 posts)But I agree with you. It's just silly to throw the F word into everything.
And I'm sure I'm guilty of using it too, but I try to avoid doing so. (Actually, I have no problem with using the word, but I prefer only to use it in it's proper context .... a situation that unfortunately has not arisen in some while.)
politicaljunkie41910
(3,335 posts)I usually ignore posts when I see the word, but I thought I'd let the offenders know that just in case there are others like me, and in case the offender did not know that they were being offensive and had something worth saying. But thanks for your response.
