(102,296 posts)They wouldl be far more invaluable to these kids in dealing with this trauma than all the Priests, Reverends and other adult "spiritual" leaders or psychiatrist/psychologists, I'd be willing to bet.

(20,876 posts)I'm reading the book "Oscar" right now -- a story based on a cat living in a nursing home that came around to the beside of the dying.
It is quite the book and had me crying my eyes out yesterday along with this other horrible news.
You might want to check-it out if you have time.
It makes the case for pets (esp. cats) as therapy aids for the sick, infirm and the disabled.

(20,876 posts)>> Oscar became the subject of a book by Dosa in 2010, Making Rounds With Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat.
I hope that Oscar lives a very long time!
The book can be found easily and for not much (I paid .99 cents for the copy I have).

(5,376 posts)Have recommended and loaned it to a few folks since then. Still get chills when I think about Oscar and how amazing he is. Long may he live!
Blessings.

(6,476 posts)He is so pretty! I wonder how much grooming goes into keeping him so perfect! My Mom was a groomer who specialized in Poodles...so naturally I'm thinking about it. LOL
Sweet pictures...Thanks.

Thank you, Playinghardball. Please know you've brightened this DUer's day immensely with your post.

(8,333 posts)He's so cute. There's a program in Baltimore called "Karma Dogs" where dogs (pre-screened for temperament) visit local libraries so the kids can read to them. The kids also take the oath of kindness to animals. Kids really respond to the dogs. Wonderful program.
Bo's presence, so cutely perched on Michelle's lap, is an extra special treat for the kids. Love it!

(14,881 posts)I had misgivings about Michelle in the beginning. Her facial features and hairstyle are very similar to one of my many asshole bosses...one who ultimately cost me, oh, about a million dollars and my potential retirement.
But that one was an animal hater and a sadist. So NOT Michelle, who clearly loves, and is loved by, Bo

(18,402 posts)I'd love to have him to cuddle in my lap for just one evening. But I wouldn't want to have to walk him, feed him, or pay for what must be frequent and very expensive grooming.
(Disclosure: we used to have a Tibetan terrier, a dog with a double coat (wooly underneath, silky on top) that would get so matted we'd have to have him shaved down to the bone. Dog grooming is a bitch.)

(2,322 posts)...that Bo is one of the last, great legacies of Senator Ted Kennedy who gifted the puppy to the Obamas. I'm glad to see Bo is proving to be the right canine for the job.

(1,415 posts)is just fantastic. There's nothing more than a puppy making children smile (especially after yesterday).
Oh, yes... I turn into a 4-year-old every time I see a dog.
