It’s important to make this point, because I keep seeing articles about the “fiscal cliff” that do, in fact, describe it — often in the headline — as a debt crisis. But it isn’t. The U.S. government is having no trouble borrowing to cover its deficit. In fact, its borrowing costs are near historic lows. And even the confrontation over the debt ceiling that looms a few months from now if we do somehow manage to avoid going over the fiscal cliff isn’t really about debt.

No, what we’re having is a political crisis, born of the fact that one of our two great political parties has reached the end of a 30-year road. The modern Republican Party’s grand, radical agenda lies in ruins — but the party doesn’t know how to deal with that failure, and it retains enough power to do immense damage as it strikes out in frustration.

So Republicans have suffered more than an election defeat, they’ve seen the collapse of a decades-long project. And with their grandiose goals now out of reach, they literally have no idea what they want — hence their inability to make specific demands.

It’s a dangerous situation. The G.O.P. is lost and rudderless, bitter and angry, but it still controls the House and, therefore, retains the ability to do a lot of harm, as it lashes out in the death throes of the conservative dream.

4. No this is not the end of the GOP. Remember there was similar talk just

after the 2008 election when polls showed that those who self-identified as Republicans fell to a low of 27%. Somehow, they made a rebound and manage to retake the House in 2010. So we must remain vigilant and can't take such questions seriously as long as they hold the House, and have a well financed 'militia'.

I think the writing is on the wall. The carcass of the GOP will continue to stink up American society but I think Krugman is correct. Just as gay rights issues can no longer be put back into the closet, the GOP cannot right themselves with their shrinking demographics and their insistence on alienating more than half of Americans.

They are done. The only question remaining is when will it get so bad for them that they cease to have an effect on the rest of us.

8. I agree we must not let our guard down as we did before but this time ..

I think two things have changed,,.,people are seeing the real agenda of the GOP and most of all,,its narrow appeal to racism and bigotry and hate is loosing out to younger demographics..

Maybe its just wishful thinking but I do think the insane right is about to really go crazy over the next two years but the tide ( demographics) are against them..

Kind of reminds me of Gettysburg..we beat 'em then..they came back but they were on a loosing path.. (I remember those days like they were only yesterday.).

Why? I've lived through the "death of" the Dems and the Repugs, and only recently.

Dems: 2002, 2004, 2010.

Repugs: 2006 (and, if any time would have been the true "death of", it would have been right after Nixon. But then, the Ayatollah made plenty of Republicans happy)

basically i think that this time the demographic changes in the country are against them and people now see their nasty agenda more clearly...and they cant change their attitudes towards others because if they did they would not be Republicans..

I can only hope..
