Adam Lanza's Father Found Out About Son's Role In Massacre From A Reporter

The father of 20-year old Adam Lanza, the alleged "shooter" in the horrific Sandy Hook school massacre, found out about what happened from a Stamford Advocate reporter yesterday afternoon.
Peter Lanza, a tax specialist at GE, was pulling into his driveway in Stamford in a Mini Cooper when reporter Maggie Gordon approached the car.

Lanza rolled down the window and asked if he could help her.

I told him I was a reporter for the Stamford Advocate, and I was surprised that no click of recognition flash across his face. So I continued, explaining that I'd been told someone at his address had been linked to the shootings in Newtown.
His expression twisted from patient, to surprise to horror; it was obvious that this moment, shortly after 1:30 p.m. Friday, was the first time he had considered his family could have been involved. He quickly declined to comment, rolled up the window, parked in the right side of the two-car garage and closed the door.

Moments later he sat at a table in the front of his three-bedroom house, a phone to his left ear and a palm to his right cheek.
Lanza and his former wife, Nancy, who was also killed yesterday, divorced several years ago after 28 years of marriage. He and Nancy Lanza shared custody of Adam, who was 17 at the time of the divorce.
Peter Lanza lives with his second wife in Stamford.

In that one moment, Lanza learned that his son killed 28 people, including 20 children, his ex-wife, and himself. It's hard to even begin to imagine what that feels like.

15. There is a process..and media always "takes cuts" in their rush to report

anything they hear or are told or they think they know.

The police on the scene were pretty busy, and someone in NJ is probably low on their "do right now" list. The murderer was not a minor child, so his parent(s) would not necessarily be the first one(s) called. They were not even sure which son he was because he used false ID.

Had he had a fake ID with John Smith as the name, would the police start calling every Smith in the phone book?

The father had been out of the home for 3+ years , and the older bother lived in another state as well.. They were not that connected to the murderer and had not been for a while.

I have a brother in Texas, and if he did something terrible, I would not know about it or know of anything about it for a while. I would react the same way if cops/media showed up at my doorstep immediately after/during an "event" created/caused by him.

The divorce, the son, the aspergers, the length of marriage, the remarriage----everything matches my own circumstances.

Except for the final horror he faces, thank god. I picked my son up and took him out breakfast this morning and we talked and hugged for a long time.

Its a very hard thing to live with for the parents. I know my daughter and son-n-law try hard but its a struggle.

He is 6. They tried to put him in first grade with a special aid and ended up having to put him in a special school after 2 months.

behavior for a person with Aspergers? In my experience one of the things that people with Aspergers completely lack is malice of any kind. Frustration, yes, but nothing directed violently outward in a concerted way.

Especially in young adulthood. Lashing out violently is NOT part and parcel of the condition. That being said, these young people are just as capable of any emotion as anyone else.

Whatever was going on in his head, I doubt it had anything to do with Aspergers.

His child will forever be known as a monstrous killer, not to mention his son killed himself, too. I'm sure he is grieving not only for those innocents killed, but his own son as well.
