The owner of Fox News disagrees with his own network stars about tighter gun control. Rupert Murdoch, billionaire proprietor of the conservative-leaning news network, wrote on Twitter late Friday: "Terrible news today. When will politicians find courage to ban automatic weapons?" Fox is home to contributors who usually oppose new gun restrictions, but when the channel's paymaster dissents, will that signal a tipping point in the gun control debate? The Twittersphere's responses were decidedly divided. Semi-automatic assault rifles like the Bushmaster .223 found at Sandy Hook have been legal in the U.S. since their federal ban lapsed in 2004, though some states maintain their own restrictions.

(17,183 posts)1. There's a lot of guns out there,
2. The REAL "useless eaters" (people like himself, T.Rump, Blankfein, the Kochs, and all-too-many others) are becoming increasingly disliked, and
3. The nutjob contingent that people like him so carefully cultivated can turn on them in an instant.

(21,786 posts)Automatic weapons haven't been legal for civilian ownership without a Class III license for almost 80 years. Semi-automatics with high capacity magazines....that's something else, though.

(182,829 posts)I am guessing here.
The Tommy gun was marketed to ranchers in the west to deal with coyotes and to even the fire power if bandits showed up at their place. One Chicago gangster happened to have some land in Wyoming or somewhere like that...either saw the Tommy gun in a town store or saw ads for them... bought some and took them back into Chicago. I am posting this from memory so it may be a little loose on the details. The Tommy gun's effect was overly dramatized in Hollywood films but the idea of a fully automatic weapon in a densely populated area (instead of out in the open areas with little population) lead to the ban.
I think that is right. At least it should be close.
