General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region Forumswe're no where ready to have a dialog on mental illness or gun control
The discussions on this board have segmented just like all the threads on rape segmented. Apparently we're not allowed to talk about mental illness or gun control just as we're not allowed to talk about rape. Because every time we talk about it we get a million posts about how not every body who has a mental illness is a threat or that not all gun owners are murderers just like all the men feel the need to jump in on all the rape threads and say that not all men are rapists. We as Americans just aren't capable of having these big conversations.

(13,258 posts)If we're not adult enough to discuss guns, are we adult enough to own guns?
If we're not adult enough to discuss rape, are we adult enough to define rape, much less write legislation regarding rape?
If we're not adult enough to discuss mental health issues, are we adult enough to define, much less address mental health issues?
If this makes no sense to someone, it's because I'm thinking aloud.
I'm no longer sure, we, the people, are capable of honest, critical thought and discussion. I'm currently in cynical mode; in case it's not obvious.

(114,904 posts)you appear to be laboring under the misbegotten idea that in order to have a discussion everyone has to agree with little old you.
lame.

(12,081 posts)dangerous. I don't think all men rape, all gun owners kill or all mentally ill are dangerous but there are men who rape, there are gun owners who kill and there are those mentally ill who are dangerous and every time we have a discussion about it those of us who even dare bring up the subject get jumped on for saying anything. Well too bad if they are allowed to have an opinion so am I. Like you said it is not all one sided and to have a discussion there must be more than one side.
