It is a song. Granted, when I hear the anthem I tear up and get goosebumps at every game I attend...But it is a Song, a symbol.period.
To steal from George Carlin: "I'll leave symbols to the symbol-minded."
How many homeless people died yesterday as people bitched about how the national anthem was sung?

(20,885 posts)I'm not a big fan of his, but I thought he was authentic and respectful, but made a statement.
Let's ignore, for a moment, that there is something sinister in promoting nationalism at sporting events.

(45,319 posts)person, it is a hard song, and I personally do not care for the gussied up with flourishes galore styling so many do with it. It should go a tad faster than most do it, and it should stand as itself, as it comes, not as some framing for the singer to show off inside of. Straight forward, hit or miss is more patriotic to me than all the trills on the Great White Way......
I missed Tyler's. I'll most likely like it.

(36,281 posts)...but other than my partner, with whom I learned that phrase in 1970, you are the only other person I've ever heard use the phrase "flying fuck at a rolling donut." 1970, northern Virginia.

(3,063 posts)The lyrics of the Star-Spangled Banner are a poem written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key, an American lawyer and amateur poet. The tune, however, is less original. The lyrics of the Star-Spangled Banner were set to British drinking song The Anacreontic Song.
Good thing this bozo did not get his way!

"... schools would be forced to maintain audio recordings of every national anthem sung in their gyms and on their fields, in case anyone complains."
$25 fine for anybody "intentionally" screwing up the anthem ... "not punishing" those who can't sing "legitimately" ...
