Both articles are from September 2012.
Nearly a month after the arrest of two Steubenville High School football standouts on charges of rape and kidnapping divided this Ohio River Valley town, there's been a swell of public support for the West Virginia teen who reported the assault -- and for a second girl who has since reported an earlier assault which also involved student athletes.
Those searching the Internet after the rape allegations surfaced in August also unearthed a months-old conversation among Steubenville baseball players and wrestlers about a possible April attack involving a 14-year-old student.
After those conversations were revealed, the girl came forward with her mother to make a report.
That case, along with the August case, are being handled by the Ohio Attorney General's office because of conflicts of interest for the local prosecutor, whose son is also on the football and wrestling teams.
Police say Monday afternoon a mother brought her 14-year-old daughter into the detective's office to report a sexual assault that allegedly took place in Steubenville back in April.
The girl's mother told police she just found out about the rape on Sunday because her daughter was too afraid to tell anyone. She allegedly kept her secret for five months.

(110,159 posts)WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:
Make all involved in the rape of the Steubenville scandal be pushed out of Juvenile court so there can be real justice.
there needs to be justice for the victims in the Steubenville, Ohio rape scandal. i'm requesting that this case be pushed up to the higher courts so that there is some real justice, also to allow for a jury trial for all involved. This is a serious offense and this needs to be an example for everyone that this type of behavior should not, and will not be Tolerated in our society. i don't believe that the police or news in the area of the alleged crimes that are covering the story are truly trying to prosecute the accused, but rather cover up a scandal that has dramatically effected the lives of many individuals.

(110,159 posts)hugely popular morning radio host
Bloomquist then went on to say that he thinks the report by the 14-year-old was "she said - he said" and was likely consensual.
"I guess the best way to sum up what I'm saying is this: It's easier to tell your parents you were raped then, 'Hey mom or dad, I got drunk and decided to let three guys have their way with me.' "
Bloomquist told The Plain Dealer this week that his roll as a host is to talk about both sides of the issue and provoke conversation.
"I'm not pointing a finger at the girls," he explained. "I am trying to tell the story from all angles."
"Who's to put the blame on the boys until they are found guilty?" he said. "Rape is a heavy word. ... Rape to me is forced. Rape to me is taking advantage of someone when they have no idea what's going on."
"Everybody knew what happened to me, adults knew, kids knew," she said. "They just closed their eyes and acted like it never happened. I felt alone. I just wanted one person to say this was wrong."
She said the community became the focus of reports about the August incident because of the way people reacted.
"What these boys did is wrong," she said. "These boys were already making a reflection on Big Red football with their actions but people standing up for them, that's why it's become about Steubenville. The rest of the football players should stand up against those boys."
She said she was not interested in revisiting her ordeal, but said she felt the young women who have come forward are brave.
"I'm sure I'm not the only victim or survivor," she said. "In a way, they are standing up for everyone who couldn't do it for themselves."

(24,411 posts)Who in the hell are these people? Look at the horrible things he is suggesting about these rape victims--that they are
also liars who are covering up their own whorish acts. They don't want to own up to their own sluttiness, so they lie
and say that they were raped--to make themselves feel better.
So, these victims are liars? They're also willing to destroy lives to protect themselves? Any other dastardly actions and motives this Bloomquist guy wants to assign to these girls?
That is just DISGUSTING.
The 14-year old who was raped, said she kept quiet for five months. Her parents weren't questioning her or blaming her for anything. They didn't know anything had happened to her. It was a secret. So, Bloomquist's sick theories--are just that--sick theories.
I am always shocked at what we do to rape victims. Have you ever seen someone report a burglary or the theft of their purse or their car stolen---and then watched them turned into horrible little devils who lie, cheat and manipulate their way through life? No. This only happens when women DARE to go up against the male establishment and tell the goddamn truth.
It's enough to make you sick.

(1,922 posts)In the late 60s, a group of hicks abducted a mentally handicapped girl after a football game and gang-raped her for hours.
After almost everyone of consequence in the town offered character references/testimony for the pukes, they all got probation.
The judge even stated that, due to her "condition", she would not suffer as much mental trauma as a "normal" person.
I can still recall my mother's reaction in that courtroom. She was threatened with contempt, but nothing happened because she had money. She would have taken it all the way and the judge knew it.

(10,597 posts)... about those small towns. I was raised in one. When I reached 18, I was out-of-there on a rail, and never returned. Now, I'm sure there are some decent small towns out there somewhere in America, but given the choice, I'm steering away from them forever more. No place to raise a family, contrary to the popular belief.

(28,158 posts)Our society is so geared toward blaming the victims of sexual assault, many never come forward. Others who do have their lives ruined for seeking justice.
Got slipped some GSB while you were out drinking? You shouldn't have been drinking in the first place.
Had more drinks than you could handle on a night out? See above.
Doesn't matter if you're an adult female, or just a child. You will be labeled a whore. You shouldn't have put yourself in that situation. What were you thinking? Oh, never mind. You obviously weren't.
Someplace I still have a copy of an affidavit floating around here of a person who raped a woman out with her friends on a girls night out. He and the bartender, a friend of his, slipped two of them some GSB and he the took two of them back to his place. Which he shared with his roommate, the bartender. One girl managed to get a call in to her husband, who came to save her. The other was taken to her home. Where she was anally raped by one of the men that night.
She pressed charges as soon as she got her senses back. He claimed she was a "party girl" who took GSB recreationly. She was willing and wanted it. He claimed he wasn't responsible because the place he took her was her own house, and how could he have found the lube in her bathroom cabinet if she hadn't told him where it was. Oddly enough, this willing person was raped in her living room because she was too heavy for him to carry to her bedroom. His words.
He got off.

(90,763 posts)repeatedly raped by a group of boys who were in middle school, high school, and even older.
They kept her locked in a van parked at a strip mall. They held her for 4 days, from Friday-Monday. The high school boys bragged about it in class on Monday morning. Laughed and joked, thought it was the greatest thing. Real proud of themselves. They drove her all over town, offering her up to others.
I turned them in.
Once it got around school about what they did the school had teachers address it in class. Sadly, other students defended the rapists. "Good boys from good families" was something I heard a lot. The local paper all but called the girl's family white trash in an article that did nothing but blame the victim.

(28,158 posts)I am proud of you for standing up and turning them in. I know for a fact that doesn't happen as much as it should. People don't want to risk being associated with the "tawdry" actions of the victim more often than most people would think. Also, people are afraid to get involve in rape cases because of the court of public opinion and how it fluctuates depending on the social standing of the parties involved.
What they did to her, it was inexcusable. I'm going to assume it wasn't an overly large city, due to the way the local media took sides. I grew up with that sort of local bias. I know it intimately. If they're the right person, from the right family, they can get away with hurting someone who's not from a connected family in the community like theirs. Their family can get the masses to convict the victim and not the attacker. Which leaves the victim with no means fight public opinion. However, I've seen the same when it comes to popular public personalities in large cities after I moved on. So, maybe I shouldn't broad brush that quite so much. Maybe it's just some broken part of our social dynamics?
Solly Mack
(90,763 posts)The "It can't happen to me because I'm a 'good girl' " (so the victim must be bad) thinking some people have. That goes along with the "good boys/good families" would never do something bad, so the victim must have wanted it. Or people use that thinking to minimize their criminal actions - calling rape a mistake someone made, so they shouldn't have their lives ruined because of it. (because they're such good boys) Forgetting the victim's life completely.
Sexism & classism. Racism, as well.
Bigotry, ignorance, fear - and just plain being mean.
The county was about 100k at the time, and the city I lived in was the county seat. Lot of snobbery. All about who you knew and how you were connected. Out of over 20 boys only 5 were charged and of those only 4 were tried. Of those, only 1 had serious charges brought against him. None served jail time.

(13,776 posts)From your description of what happened afterwards, and the support that those criminals got, it sounds like you took a big risk by blowing the whistle on those boys. Kids who don't just look the other way in a high-school environment are really courageous. Thank you.

(90,763 posts)I went to a teacher I trusted who turned out to be a coward. I had to threaten her with exposing her lack of action to get her to take action. But since I didn't believe she would take action, I called the police myself.
Later, this same teacher, as well as the principal and another teacher, came after me for various BS reasons. I had an eventful senior year of high school.

(23,272 posts)They brag/have bragged about their exploits with impunity. The county prosecutor (Jane Hanlin) is colluding on this since her son (Charlie Keenan) is one of the "Rape Crew", so she has a vested interest in bullying victims and their families into dropping charges.
Other, older girls have now come forward and said there is a systemic problem with this going back for years, with coaches, fellow Steubenville High school students, and adults providing protection to the perps.
This may even be a kind of Penn State redux.
I'm guessing a LOT of evidence has already been scrubbed in these cases. Victims will never see justice.

(115,103 posts)Now, the very fact that this core group of criminals within the student body are known by this moniker should set off alarm bells for everyone. This entire investigation has centered around a single rape victim and assault that came to light this summer. But you dont get a name like Rape Crew from a single incident of gang rape committed upon a lone victim. One thing is certain, there ARE more victims out there. One of the chief aims in exposing and bringing to justice the participants and beneficiaries of this conspiracy is to embolden, encourage and empower these other victims to come forward and seek justice.
It appears to be working.

(13,485 posts)What I want to know is how they got that way. Where are their parents in this? Is this generational? Are their parents weak or are they the teachers of the behavior or both? It's definitely not psychopathic behavior, it's sociopathic in nature. Somewhere, someway, they learned, were encouraged or were allowed to be completely narcissistic without bounds or respect. And somewhere, they learned the language of selfishness, hate, disregard for human empathy, prejudice against women and a complete disassociation from civility.
They are without a doubt sociopathic.
