Nearly a month after the arrest of two Steubenville High School football standouts on charges of rape and kidnapping divided this Ohio River Valley town, there's been a swell of public support for the West Virginia teen who reported the assault -- and for a second girl who has since reported an earlier assault which also involved student athletes.

Those searching the Internet after the rape allegations surfaced in August also unearthed a months-old conversation among Steubenville baseball players and wrestlers about a possible April attack involving a 14-year-old student.

After those conversations were revealed, the girl came forward with her mother to make a report.

That case, along with the August case, are being handled by the Ohio Attorney General's office because of conflicts of interest for the local prosecutor, whose son is also on the football and wrestling teams.

Second Alleged Steubenville Rape Case

Police say Monday afternoon a mother brought her 14-year-old daughter into the detective's office to report a sexual assault that allegedly took place in Steubenville back in April.

The girl's mother told police she just found out about the rape on Sunday because her daughter was too afraid to tell anyone. She allegedly kept her secret for five months.

Bloomquist told The Plain Dealer this week that his roll as a host is to talk about both sides of the issue and provoke conversation.

"I'm not pointing a finger at the girls," he explained. "I am trying to tell the story from all angles."

"Who's to put the blame on the boys until they are found guilty?" he said. "Rape is a heavy word. ... Rape to me is forced. Rape to me is taking advantage of someone when they have no idea what's going on."

But another former Steubenville student, who is now in college, said it was the preference the community gave to athletes that kept her from making a formal report when she said her ex-boyfriend – a Big Red football player – sexually assaulted her several years ago.

"Everybody knew what happened to me, adults knew, kids knew," she said. "They just closed their eyes and acted like it never happened. I felt alone. I just wanted one person to say this was wrong."

She said the community became the focus of reports about the August incident because of the way people reacted.

"What these boys did is wrong," she said. "These boys were already making a reflection on Big Red football with their actions but people standing up for them, that's why it's become about Steubenville. The rest of the football players should stand up against those boys."

She said she was not interested in revisiting her ordeal, but said she felt the young women who have come forward are brave.

"I'm sure I'm not the only victim or survivor," she said. "In a way, they are standing up for everyone who couldn't do it for themselves."

In the late 60s, a group of hicks abducted a mentally handicapped girl after a football game and gang-raped her for hours.

After almost everyone of consequence in the town offered character references/testimony for the pukes, they all got probation.

The judge even stated that, due to her "condition", she would not suffer as much mental trauma as a "normal" person.

Someplace I still have a copy of an affidavit floating around here of a person who raped a woman out with her friends on a girls night out. One girl managed to get a call in to her husband, who came to save her. The other was taken to her home. Where she was anally raped by one of the men that night.

She pressed charges as soon as she got her senses back. He claimed she was a "party girl" who took GSB recreationly. She was willing and wanted it. He claimed he wasn't responsible because the place he took her was her own house, and how could he have found the lube in her bathroom cabinet if she hadn't told him where it was. Oddly enough, this willing person was raped in her living room because she was too heavy for him to carry to her bedroom. His words.

21. Happened when I was high school. A middle school aged girl was

repeatedly raped by a group of boys who were in middle school, high school, and even older.

They kept her locked in a van parked at a strip mall. They held her for 4 days, from Friday-Monday. The high school boys bragged about it in class on Monday morning. Laughed and joked, thought it was the greatest thing. Real proud of themselves. They drove her all over town, offering her up to others.

I turned them in.

Once it got around school about what they did the school had teachers address it in class. Sadly, other students defended the rapists. "Good boys from good families" was something I heard a lot. The local paper all but called the girl's family white trash in an article that did nothing but blame the victim.

I am proud of you for standing up and turning them in. I know for a fact that doesn't happen as much as it should. People don't want to risk being associated with the "tawdry" actions of the victim more often than most people would think. Also, people are afraid to get involve in rape cases because of the court of public opinion and how it fluctuates depending on the social standing of the parties involved.

What they did to her, it was inexcusable. I'm going to assume it wasn't an overly large city, due to the way the local media took sides. I grew up with that sort of local bias. I know it intimately. If they're the right person, from the right family, they can get away with hurting someone who's not from a connected family in the community like theirs. Their family can get the masses to convict the victim and not the attacker. Which leaves the victim with no means fight public opinion. However, I've seen the same when it comes to popular public personalities in large cities after I moved on. So, maybe I shouldn't broad brush that quite so much. Maybe it's just some broken part of our social dynamics?

The county was about 100k at the time, and the city I lived in was the county seat. Lot of snobbery. All about who you knew and how you were connected. Out of over 20 boys only 5 were charged and of those only 4 were tried. Of those, only 1 had serious charges brought against him. None served jail time.

I went to a teacher I trusted who turned out to be a coward. I had to threaten her with exposing her lack of action to get her to take action. But since I didn't believe she would take action, I called the police myself.

Later, this same teacher, as well as the principal and another teacher, came after me for various BS reasons. I had an eventful senior year of high school.

They brag/have bragged about their exploits with impunity. The county prosecutor (Jane Hanlin) is colluding on this since her son (Charlie Keenan) is one of the "Rape Crew", so she has a vested interest in bullying victims and their families into dropping charges.

Other, older girls have now come forward and said there is a systemic problem with this going back for years, with coaches, fellow Steubenville High school students, and adults providing protection to the perps.

My youngest daughter who is 12 models and acts and I was sharing pics from a photoshoot with family. MIL, who lives with me, is not tech savvy and way too trusting, shared pics with someone she met online who immediately posted inappropriate comments. MIL asked where hubby was because she thought she "might have made a mistake" sharing the pics. Hubby was so furious and removed the pics.
