http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2013/01/04/the-entire-world-is-increasingly-using-facebook/Back in 2009, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg tweaked his famous social networks mission to read: Making the world open and connected. Three years later, the world appears to have heard him loud and clear.
A new set of maps from social media strategist Vincenzo Cosenza reveals the most popular social network in nearly every country around the world, and the map for December 2012 shows that Facebook now dominates 127 of the 137 countries tracked by Internet ranker Alexa, with over 1 billion monthly active users.
The growth mainly came from Asia, where the site has 278 million users, compared with Europes 251 million, according to The Next Web. (Zuckerberg may hail from the States, but North America is actually ranked third in Facebook users, with 243 million).

(34,179 posts)Friend, unfriend, like, unlike, sorry, but I don't see the advantage, or attraction of Facebook. If I want to contact them, I can use phone, email, text, etc. I don't see the point about putting up every little detail on a page that a lot of people can see, and then have my information gratuitously data mined again and again.
Furthermore, are we losing our ability to get along face to face. Apparently so, for as people become more connected online, they are becoming more isolated in reality.
Facebook is a bane, a blight, and hopefully will die a quick death.

She also uses it to keep in touch with far flung friends and relatives and whats happening in their lives. I prefer the face to face thing but its hard when people live on other continents.

(14,910 posts)Case in point: tonight the Genesee Valley Audobon Society is hosting an Owl Prowl that I would have ordinarily missed.
I also recieved an alert from the Museum and Science Center that this is the last weekend for the T. rex exhibit.
I was also made aware of an event at Gander Mountain this afternoon (the store in Rochester, NY that sold the weapons that killed the Webster firemen)
Personally, I believe Facebook is a great resource, when used properly.

(18,184 posts)I've been writing little comments here on DU for the last ten years, so I can't criticize people who do the same thing on facebook.
However, I prefer DU's political focus and better functionality.

anecdotal evidence points to a negative correlation between wealth and intelligence, what'a way to run a civilization...
