(25,699 posts)Yes, fuck you, minimum-wage employee struggling to pay the rent. You have not the time to contribute to my idea of "changing the world," so I dismiss your existence!

(213 posts)I read the strip to imply something apart from earning money. Can't minimum wagers make the world a better place?

(3,894 posts)time, as many have to have more than one job, and heaven forbid if they also have kids.... No! It is unreasonable to that burden of guilt on anyone who is a "cashier" or a "bookkeeper" or a "janitor" or even a "teacher", many of whom barely make a livable family wage.
It's not only unreasonable, it's cruel.
What a terrible existence that must be, being too busy/distracted to make a difference. And I am not even trying to dog on anyone. Just, there are just small, insignificant things that matter. Who knows, the person whose life you are describing might BE making a difference and not even know it.

(115,681 posts)"what do you do?"
"I am a lawyer."
Again, I hear this more from professionals as people I know working for min wage or really struggling know they are more than their job, not defined by their job.
Along the line of "how you doing? Keeping busy?" "yes, too busy" ha ha ha. Like being busy at work is the goal of us all.
People, ALL people are more than their job.
Though I do agree with you that "no, I mean for the world" is pretentious bullshit as we all do something for the world and those who are struggling to make ends meet may not have that extra time or money "for the world".

(213 posts)In my simple view.
it's just pointing out that WHAT DO YOU DO should imply more than just making money
reminds me of a book I read recently about outliers - all in all it was a good book until it described success - then hoo boy, apparently if you were a doctor or a lawyer you were automatically considered a SUCCESS. WTF.

"Success" is such a misinterpreted concept in our society.
FWIW, I read that cartoon as an "outside" the box message. Yes all of us can become too focused on what we do day to day to get by. But even a little thought toward thinking outside of that box can be a step toward making the world a better place. Even if it's just one's own little piece of it.
