Social media wins again. The racists will have to find darker places to hide in the future. We will shine a bright light on them every chance we get.

We've taken public shaming to a great new level and for the most part, we do it for good. I like that.

For the past year, the Spanish language signs at the two elementary schools told readers they needed special permission to use the playground facilities and warned that violations of that requirement could result in police action.

That message directly contradicted the English signs on the very same poles, which told readers they only needed parental or guardian supervision to use the playgrounds, along with a warning to play at your own risk.

and why these signs needed to be taken down, and replaced with ones that exactly repeat the American signs.

which goes along with the 'wrong sign' claim in the article.

In another DU thread someone posted a picture of the correct sign placement here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022138925#post82

(same english and spanish message for a playing field),

but the sign is white there not yellow as on the playground.

"Regardless of what the signs do or do not say, if there is even a perception that we are discriminating against any group, I felt they needed to come down immediately,” Kohel said.

Gee that's a non apology if I ever saw one. How about this, Ms. Phyllis Kohel, you take a Spanish class and learn how to say "I am very sorry that such signs were ever placed and I promise to police them myself from now on, with my spiffy Spanish education at my side."

That's a little closer to what I want.

instead of attacking people.

Maybe more people would take you seriously in a thread.

Just a thought.......

on the same fucking sign, there's no mistaking or perceiving or missing context or may-or-may-not-have-said. The sign is blatant racism. No ifs, ands or "I'm sorry if anyone might have felt offended..." about it.

That sign is appropriate to other fields.

The only thing OBVIOUS about this is that the people putting the signs up PROBABLY do not read spanish and could not tell one sign from another.

Rectified. Now go find the bigot who ordered the signs, like probably the chairman of the local town council? Really, who ordered those signs to be printed and installed? Does anyone know yet? The locals need to keep their eyes on that dude or dudette. Thanks rightsideout for posting this.
