The Citadel in Idaho - Building survivalist/prepper compound w/arms factory, firing ranges, bunkers

Last edited Fri Jan 11, 2013, 11:04 PM - Edit history (1)

This was mentioned on the Colbert Report the other night. I thought I'd learn more about it.

The Citadel is evolving as a planned community where residents are bound together by:

• Patriotism
• Pride in American Exceptionalism
• Our proud history of Liberty as defined by our Founding Fathers, and
Physical preparedness to survive and prevail in the face of natural catastrophes — such as Hurricanes Sandy or Katrina — or man-made catastrophes such as a power grid failure or economic collapse.
E.g.: Preppers

Marxists, Socialists, Liberals and Establishment Republicans will likely find that life in our community is incompatible with their existing ideology and preferred lifestyles.

DESCRIPTION: The Citadel Community will house between 3,500 and 7,000 patriotic American families who agree that being prepared for the emergencies of life and being proficient with the American icon of Liberty — the Rifle — are prudent measures. There will be no HOA. There will be no recycling police and no local ordinance enforcers from City Hall.

LOCATION: We are in the process of selecting the ideal location among the beautiful mountains of Idaho in the American Redoubt.
Idaho. Of course.

About the Citadel
Our children will be educated instead of indoctrinated.

We intend to purchase at least 2,000 acres, although preferably 3,000 acres for the Citadel Community. A minimum of one square mile will be protected within our wall and towers (640 full acres!). Ideally, up to two full square miles will be protected behind the walls (1,280 acres)!!

The Towers and Curtain Wall providing the town's primary perimeter defense will be inaccessible to tourists. Each Tower will house condos. The wall sections between Towers will be the location for many of the larger homes. By looking at the Artist's Concept (left) you can see that housing will be well-removed from tourist foot-traffic. The Perimeter Road follows the Curtain Wall.

Each neighborhood within the walls will have lower defensive walls, dividing the town into defensible sections/neighborhoods. Each neighborhood will have similar housing for visual uniformity and aesthetic appeal.

They're on private land, doing their own thing. Why in the world would YOU CARE? And how in the world would you know WHO is welcomed there and who isn't? You don't, of course. But that doesn't stop you from being bothered by this...

WHY does the prospect of people living in their own place and doing their own thing bother you so much?

Can you honestly say that you believe this Idaho citadel will have a mosque? Will it welcome gays and lesbians? Will it welcome atheists?

I just don't like the idea of communities that are built around intolerance. And, I think people with this attitude are intolerant. I have some of them in my family.

And you gave yourself away with your use of the word "preppers", which is a bad word for some reason at DU.

Here's a question I'd pose to you... Do you think the power grid in the United States is antiquated, and ready to collapse? Most DUers do.

I've seen countless hundreds of posts here at DU claiming that our "infrastructure" is not only out of date, but unreliable due to age and lack of maintenance and therefore worthy of tens of billions of dollars of government spending.

I live in a place where there are power outages on a WEEKLY basis. I mentioned once here years ago that I had supplies that would allow me to go without electrical power for 6 months. For that, I was called paranoid.

Why am I defending "these preppers with their stockpile"? Because they're doing it on private property, that's why. What people do on their own property and with their own time and money I have no business putting my nose into, and neither do you. I think that's called a Fourth Amendment right.

from the outside in my original post. Some of the posts call them "fuckers" and have much worse sentiments than my brain surgeon/oncologist post. Just can't figure out why my post was targeted by you among all the other shit that was said.

Also "give myself away"?? I live in the Seattle area and am a raging liberal, unapologetic. So what did "prepper" give away? I used it because I've seen it in posts here and I know there is a show called "Doomsday Preppers" on TV, though I've never watched it. I'm intrigued that I've come across as someone "giving themselves away". I've been on DU for ten years and have never been accused of that. Maybe I'm finally busting out of my "boring"!

I get your point (I think) and don't want to continue the argument. I have loads of food in my cupboards/pantry as I live outside Seattle in a rural area and once we were snowed in and couldn't get to the store and we had no electricity for four days. We were freezing and literally burning kitchen chairs to stay warm. I also did not have many groceries on hand. I now keep a hefty supply of food and wood. I guess there is a fine line (in some people's minds) between being adequately prepared as you are and being totally over the top like someone expecting Armageddon.

world. There are DUers who think the word "prepper" is bad, and not too long ago there was an OP who said "preppers" were child abusers by virtue of their beliefs. I was a Boy Scout and taught that it wasn't possible to be "too prepared".

I didn't mean to offend... I'm sorry for that. One thing I'm not in short supply of is wine. Maybe I've had a little too much this evening.

I lived on Whidbey Island for four years and The Sound is one of my favorite places on Earth...

are two separate things. I don't think many people, even the rabbid ones they think they are going to appease, will be happy there.

I hope to hell they are able to build this community. The violence that they will surely occur when these gun nuts differ in opinion may provide entertainment for those of us "not allowed" inside.

On second thought, both families that actually move there may get along fine.

Aside from that onerous, socialistic Freedumb-destroying travesty, a library? Really?

A tourist and visitors center? Really? Who's going to visit, other than Remington sales teams and other preptards?

An airstrip? For who? Can't they stand on their own two proud independent oh-so-heavily armed American feet? Appendicitis? Bullshit, let me shoot that out for ya, Randy!

"A library" - probably loaded with creationism, and gun and military history
"A tourist and visitor center... other than other preptards?" Exactly - other preptards.
"Airstrip" - can't help you too much, unless they plan to link with other future citadels or they want to fly their ass to Texas.

you've got a bunch of people on plots of max 1 acre. No HOA. Their entire credo can be summed up as "your right to swing your fist ends at my face." How long before the disagreements start, and they end up having to re-discover the concept of governance? Or are they just planning to hold shoot-outs on John Parker Green?

Also, they go on and on about "liberty" and getting away from those nasty govt busy-bodies, and yet they also make a big deal about how they are not going "provoke the govt", and they are going to abide by all "constitutional fed and state laws."

So. if they're going to abide by all the laws we're abiding by, what liberties do they have that we effete non-citadel liberals don't have? Or, is that word "constitutional" dog-whistle for "we're going to ignore any laws we feel like, by declaring them unconstitutional?"

will have a similar ending.

Rajneeshees had a complete city too, pretty much overnight, from "donations" by "believers." In a complete high desert, no less, this artificial environment bloomed under the application of gobs and gobs of money. They went from optimistic true believers to paranoid peeps armed to the teeth in no time flat.

Proud owners of the title of "committed the first domestic terrorist attack on U.S. soil" which was the food poisoning at the salad bar in The Dalles, which sickened 700+ people, IIRC. Then the attempted murder of our state A.G. plus a few others were in the plotting stages. This was right after the entire commune armed itself, started walking around showing off their "security sytems" and bragging that they would take down anyone who they believed to be a threat, which by then was pretty much everybody. Even some inside the commune. When it imploded, it did so totally but at least without the mayhem they had intended to cause as they became more paranoid and delusional about everything.

Now their Rajneesh movement/commune is just a memory, dust in the wind. And this Citadel will crumble too, in time - this is often what happens when people join up with strangers to live for a cause that they don't completely understand, following people whose motives they do not question until it starts getting wierd.

This is nothing new. Wish it was.

They want their survivalist fantasy theme park to be built in St. Maries, Idaho - if they get the right kind of tax incentives... Ever been to St. Maries, Idaho? Well I have. The population of St. Maries is about 2,000. Its worth noting the locals have already built on all the flat land that exists in St. Maries. What's left? Mountains and trees - lots and lots and lots of trees. So they are going to build a walled fortress community on the side of a mountain? Yeah - good luck with that.

Now, most the folks up in St. Maries are hunters and black helicopter true believers. What they really want is to be left alone. They fucking hate newcomers and if your grandparents weren't born there - your a fucking newcomer.

In general folks in that neck of the woods don't really care what you do as long as you keep your distance and stay off their land. So... A whole bunch of "tourists" showing up wanting to change things? Did I tell you how much they fucking hate newcomers?
