A two-month old rhino was hacked at least 18 times with axes and machetes when she got too close to poachers cutting off her slain mothers horn in South Africa, a conservation NGO said Friday.
The poor baby had obviously tried to return to its mother while the poachers were removing her horn and they slashed at her face with a panga and an axe repeatedly in order to chase her away, said Karen Trendler of the Endangered Wildlife Trust.
The baby rhino had 18 very deep lacerations across her face, one which cuts right through her stump and the other through her skull, but was said to be doing remarkably well.
Poachers slaughtered a record 668 rhinos in South Africa last year as demand on the Asian black market for their horns continued to surge.
Some think the material, which is of the same material as human nails, has medicinal values.
Those claims have been widely discredited.

(24,368 posts)I would think that if you put a warning such as that in your title, there would be pictures, either in the post or in the linked story.
There were neither, not that I was hoping there were.
The word "Graphic" has a meaning;
1.
a. Of or relating to written representation.
b. Of or relating to pictorial representation.
2. Of, relating to, or represented by or as if by a graph.
3.
a. Described in vivid detail.
b. Clearly outlined or set forth.
I wouldn't call the description "Vivid detail"
The reason I bring this up is because it is all too prevalent on DU these days, as if we aren't adults and everyone's tender sensibilities need to be protected.
Life is often ugly, but that doesn't mean simple words describing such ugliness need a warning.

(23,218 posts)I had received a complaint in the past for posting an article about animal cruelty that involved no pictures and was told by this particular member to include a "graphic warning" in the title in the future.
I do agree with you ~ "Life is often ugly, but that doesn't mean simple words describing such ugliness need a warning."
