ANA Grounds Fleet of Boeing 787s After Battery Fault

(Bloomberg) All Nippon Airways Co. grounded its fleet of 17 Boeing Co. (BA) 787 Dreamliners today after smoke from one of the planes forced the pilot to make an emergency landing in Japan.

The Japanese transport ministry said the pilots and air- traffic controllers saw smoke, and passengers were evacuated on emergency chutes. The carrier is investigating, and there was no information yet about injuries, said Ryosei Nomura, a spokesman for Tokyo-based All Nippon.

The emergency landing comes a week after the battery in a Japan Airlines Co. 787 caught fire on Jan. 7 in Boston. That incident, which is still under investigation, prompted a review by U.S. regulators of the new model’s design and manufacturing. The 787, Boeing’s most technologically advanced jet, is the first to use lithium-ion batteries and to have a composite- plastic body.

“We are aware of the event and working with our customer,” Lori Gunter, a spokeswoman for Boeing in Everett, Washington, where the main 787 factory is, said in an e-mail. “We don’t have any more details to share at this point.” ...................(more)
