(111,254 posts)The air in Beijing was almost unbreathable when people rode bicycles everywhere. Now that they've gone to scooters and cars, it's past unbreathable and all the way into dangerous.
I remember cities here in the US when people heated with coal and factories ran on coal and it was awful. Multiply that by a factor of about 100 and you'll have the air in Beijing.
It's why we got the EPA, catalytic converters on cars, gasohol in winter, and we converted away from coal whenever and wherever we could. It's a reminder of what we'll go back to if the Koch led Republicans get their way.
However, that first toon warmed my heart.

(17,528 posts)front porch because there was a big greenhouse a couple blocks away. I remember seeing the black smoke pouring from the chimney. Thought it was just a messy nuisance...never dreamed it was dangerous.
