Earlier this morning, I was going through my usual routine of reading the liberal blogs and news sites. While at one site (not DU), suddenly my computer froze. Then, the scroll bar started scrolling wildly up and down, as if someone else was in control of my computer and wanted to show me. I turned everything off and unplugged the internet cable. Does anyone know what happened? Thanks to anyone who can provide insight!

(464 posts)...and in frustration I move the mouse up and down even though I know it won't help. Then the computer "unfreezes" and the screen moves up and down as if it was a delayed effect. Not saying that's what happened with you, but that has been my experience.

(51,122 posts)You do some combination of moving your mouse, clicking, scrolling, and there is some wild random movement. Code got some conflicting information and freaked out.
Happens to me on PCs and Macs once in a while. I wouldn't worry.
But reboot anyway.

More than once, then I would be looking at any software I recently added or updated.

(28,253 posts)Here's what to do:
1) Download the following two apps from CNET or other reputable site...
MalwareBytes AntiMalware Free Edition
CCleaner Free Edition
2) Go to your Installed Applications and see if you have a few unknown applications installed, and if you do, uninstall them.
3) Run a FULL MalwareBytes Sweep.
4) Run a Full CCleaner sweep.
5) Run CCleaner sweep a second time. (PricePeep and a few others get their hooks in deeply and a double sweep is needed.)
6) Also clean your registries, using CCleaner or Advanced SystemCare (mentioned below)
The free editions of MalwareBytes and CCleaner are user initiated utilities, meaning they are on-demand utilities.
To get automated coverage, I've found success with Microsoft's Security Essentials (free) & Advanced SystemCare (free). They will run full-time in free mode. Then you'll just need to run MalwareBytes and CCleaner every so often just to catch anything that is missed.

(56,582 posts)People who have the ability to take over your computer generally do so without letting you know, nowadays.
I don't know if that's supposed to make you feel better or not.
