Love this pic and story... just had to share with my DU friends
found on fb: link
A blinded fox cub left for dead by a speeding car has been helped back to health by his unusual pals - a group of orphaned kittens.
The injured animal was found with severe head injuries by the side of a dual carriageway after he was hit by a car. These kittens helped nurse this injured cub back to health. While still unconscious, the fox was put into a cage with three orphaned kittens which were found in a box . Amazingly, the cats immediately began to groom the fox and snuggled up to him as he slowly came out of the coma. The cub, which was not even expected to survive the ordeal, then began to regain his sight and health after just five days. Now the fox has made a full recovery and formed an incredible bond with the feline friends. 'It was very sweet, the cats needed something to snuggle up to and they loved his fur. One of the owners of the rescue centre said 'One of them used to lick him all the time as he slowly came out of his coma. 'Once awake the four of them became best friends and the kittens acted like a guiding light to the fox as he regained his sight.' 'I think they all helped save each other's lives.' ?
The cub was eventually sent to Fox Protect in Tunbridge Wells to complete his rehabilitation before he was released back into the wild and the kittens found a home. ?

(51,666 posts)I had a stray kitten at the clinic for a while that couldn't see, hear, smell, or do much of anything for a couple of days after running into a car tire while bolting across the street at about 8 weeks of age. Major concussion.
She got over it, had some trivial residual issues that didn't affect quality of life and that only I could tell were there. She's been in a new home for nearly 2 years now and is fine by all accounts (it's far from here so I don't see her anymore).

(13,776 posts)I have to hope that anybody loving enough to care for all these animals, take the pictures, and report the story would know what was best for the fox. But I did feel a pang when I read that they were separated.... Maybe this is just an example of how we can all help each other with love and caring as we go through life, then go our separate ways, if need be, better for the experience.

(10,597 posts)... a sad story with a happy ending. It's the eyes, isn't it? Fox eyes alone scare the crap out of me.. But oh so majestic in the cubs body. Those kitties doctored him right up.

(809 posts)Do we know that fox kits know how to survive in the wild without learning things from the fox mother?

(135,425 posts)I imagine they do a triage and see who's who, and who can make it and who cannot.
They seem to be an arm of an umbrella organization/registered charity called The Fox Project that does rescue/rehab on a regular basis.

(11,065 posts)Cute story though, and the photos are really adorable.
I didn't see any of our neighborhood fox critters tonight while out with the dog. We see them almost every night right around midnight, so it worries me if we don't run into any of them. Tomorrow is garbage day though, and with most folks putting out their trash for pick up the night before, I suspect they were busy hunting their dinners in peoples' trash. They're interested in my dog while he's just as interested in them. I think they can't quite figure out what species each other is so aren't sure whether to run away/give chase or contemplate each other as a love interest. So instead they sit down and do a lot of curious mutual staring. I've gotten to the point that I can identify individuals now and suspect that it won't be long till I start giving names to them. They're beautiful and interesting cat-dog creatures.

(3,102 posts)every day a fox comes to my back door for food and it always reminds me more of a cat than a dog.

(17,528 posts)Does it know a human is feeding it or does he think the food is just there? Like finding food in the garbage can.
forestpath
(3,102 posts)he always seems very alert and runs off at the slightest noise outside, but usually returns before long. He first showed up on my patio last fall, eating the bird seed and peanuts I throw out for the birds, squirrels and chipmunks. I was absolutely flabbergasted - though he looked healthy I decided to throw out something more substantial for him. I know dogs love peanut butter, so I started throwing out cut up peanut butter sandwiches on whole wheat bread, and it's so cute to see him daintily pick them up in his mouth and trot off with them - very catlike demeanor and movement. I have two completely indoor cats, and they love to watch him too - they don't get all excited and puffy the way they do when a neighboring cat shows up to torment them!

(85,996 posts)I think it has a temp den way in the back. It will sit on our pile of leaves and warm itself in the sun for hours and hours. It's here most of the week when I get home in the morning for work and it stays until sundown. It hunts rodents around the house and eats out of folks' garbage.
I'm worried today because it's a little over ten degrees here and it's out back where the sun should be. I had hoped it was asleep, in semi-hiber mode in a den somewhere, but here it is, laying there waiting for the sun that isn't coming. Nothing at all that I can do but worry for it.

(85,996 posts). . . it's not a tame one, though. It's the most beautiful thing I can see outside of my kitchen window (next to the deer who come by occasionally and sleep the day away back there).
