Found on the Occupy the NRA Facebook
Academy Award-winning filmmaker Michael Moore told HuffPost Live Friday that he believes the deadly mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., was a "tipping point" in the gun control debate and that the National Rifle Association is "doomed" as a result.

(206 posts)More to the left of the Democratic Party or not, people should always use facts.
Taverner
(55,476 posts)It's only Republicans, Fascists and Conservatives who accuse him of not using facts.
But they lie
All conservatives lie
It's all part of that bubble they put themselves into - KKKarl Rove himself said he is not a member of the "reality based community"
We are talking about moore claiming that all parents think of Sandy Hook when they drop their kids off at school. That is an opinion, nowhere near being a fact.
Taverner
(55,476 posts)And many parents do think that
Not every parent, mind you. Some parents love their guns more than their kids, but it's a free country.
regjoe
(206 posts)But I believe those of us more rational parents are of the majority.
Taverner
(55,476 posts)And I don't consider burying your head in the sand "rational"
That's called "denial"
Now go hug your guns. I'm sure they love you back.
You are unable to justify your irrational fear so you resort to emotion and rhetoric.
You remind me alot of my in-laws and their fears of flying after 9-11.

(55,476 posts)How rude
Seriously, gun violence on schools is rare. So are car crashes. So is rapid cabin depressurization on airplanes.
That doesn't mean we throw caution to the wind
Seriously, how important is your GUN if you would rather have it over your children's safety
That's what's sad
regjoe
(206 posts)my childrens safety at school is not determined by guns.

(3,709 posts)I don't have kids, and I can't drive past a school and not think of Sandy Hook. I am certain there are many who do and many who don't, but the point is we shouldn't forget.

(3,709 posts)Moore's point that the NRA is doomed because no parent can forget Sandy Hook is unfortunately a bit of a stretch.
I wish it wasn't.

(50,566 posts)it crosses my mind, yeah. I didn't say it kept me from going anywhere, did I?
There have been threats of violence called into my kids' school. If you have kids, you'd better just hope they're not in the wrong place at the wrong time.
We are unique in the world for the frequency and severity of these shootings. The Gun Humpers have huge power here. USA! USA!

But fear is a good thing...causes us to do all kinds of smart things, including passing useful laws to better protect us all.

....or do they frequent another board?
regjoe
(206 posts)You see, unlike moore, I actually drop my kid off at school. I actually communicate with other parents.
OldDem2012
(3,526 posts)....I suspect we're in tune with other parents as well, or better, than you claim to be. We're all worried to one degree or another and we live in a deep red state.
Maybe you should ask a few more direct questions from those other parents with whom you claim to be communicating.
The ever expected throwing out of the word "claim" in hopes of dismissing facts.
Tell me, would the question "Do you think about the shooting at Sandy Hook when you drop off your kids?" be direct enough?
Not sure if you noticed or not, but I NEVER said EVERY parent didn't dwell on Sandy Hook. I merely stated that I do not, and that so far, none of the other parents I have spoken to do.
OldDem2012
(3,526 posts)....that warrant dismissal. "Claims", yes....facts, no.
But we certainly know what happened at Sandy Hook, don't we? That seems factual enough for me to be concerned every time I drop my kid off at school. The parents my wife and I talk with are all concerned, even the folks who own guns and never thought about gun control before.
pamela
(3,469 posts)He drops his kids off at school, talks to other parents about Sandy Hook, asks them if they think about Sandy Hook when they drop their kids off and does all of this without "thinking" of Sandy Hook. Yeah, that's possible...

Never had anyone wave their presumably concealed weapon at me from their car until this year. It's only a matter of time before one of these exceptional law abiding citizens with their concealed weapon pops one off at some one in a public place,

And the fear my dear gun nut, is real, and as far as not letting it shape your life, that is total and utter bull shit!

(19,841 posts)NONE of us is safe from this insanity in a public place in America. We all think about it. We all imagine it. From time to time. And then we try not to think about it, and then there's another Sandy Hook....
We are being held hostage in this country and it is taking a serious toll on all of us.

(12,081 posts)The threat at my daughter's school was a very serious threat that ended up involving the FBI. It is definitely more in my mind than it use to be. Unfortunately they could just as easily get shot at the grocery store or at the library as they could at school. No where is really safe anymore, so I just kind of have to force the thought out of my mind so I can allow them to leave the house.

(4,795 posts)We have no shortage of things to be scared of or feel sorrow for in human history.
If anything its the pickup that has changed in our school (or did in the recent aftermath). All the parents smile a bit more, and hug a bit harder.
But all such things fade. They must. Humans must learn to live with what we do, because we do so much harm to each other. Fortunately, we don't need to feel a certain way every day to remember a feeling and to know what is right or wrong.

(177 posts)As a former teacher I worry. My kid goes to school and I worry. More now that a school has been invaded, and children murdered. I don't care about the gun debate. Legislating that is above my pay grade. I care about never pulling up to my child's school, and seeing the lights and sirens, as the police inform me my fifth grader is dead. I know many other parents that are part of our school association who feel the same way. The fact that gun supporters are heckling the surviving parents of these murderer children is despicable to me. Do they not realize it could have been their kids?

(8,646 posts)I did this morning, with one of the parent's (of a slain Sandy Hook child) words ringing in my ears, "I put 2 kids on the bus that morning, but only one got off." I was walking my 2 youngest to the bus and couldn't get those words out of my head the entire time.
