Florida man accused of fraud after name change in 'act of love'

MIAMI (Reuters) - A newly married South Florida man who opted to take his wife's last name is fighting the state's Department of Motor Vehicles after it suspended his driving license on grounds of fraud.

Real estate investor Lazaro Sopena offered to change his name following his 2011 marriage to Hanh Dinh in order to help his wife's Vietnamese family perpetuate their family surname.

Shortly after their marriage, Lazaro Dinh obtained a new passport and Social Security card and changed his bank account and credit cards before applying to update his drivers license.

"It was an act of love. I have no particular emotional ties to my last name," said Dinh, 40, who was born in Cuba and came to the United States at the age of 11 in 1984.

Honestly I would expect nothing else from a state with a blood red government, getting involved in something that has nothing to do with them and most likely because it goes against whats "normal". I would not have any problem changing my last name if my girlfriend was really attached to hers, but she hates her last name and that side of the family so its no problem for us.

and will remain so until we throw the Republicans out of the governor's mansion and the state house. Calling ourselves purple is ridiculous when you look at what has happened to our state government.

....re-elected our Democratic senator, booted two incument Republican congressmen from office (Rivera and West), brought back to office one of the most outspokenly liberal congressmen in the House (Grayson), and booted a prospective Speaker of the Florida House.

We're still a long ways to solid blue, but Florida as a state (not as a government) deserves to at least be called purple.

I can't call a state purple when his election was as close as it was. He carried both his slice of Palm Beach County and Martin County...he was defeated by the good people of St. Lucie County. He was my representative until I moved a bit south in Palm Beach County...but he was still my ex-husband's rep. The ex didn't like him and was going to write in my name until I convinced him that was the equivalent of a half a vote for West, so he voted for Murphy.

Bill Nelson is a low profile Democrat and his opponent was a moron. I like Nelson for the most part, but a charismatic republican could have given him a run for his money.

If we elect a Democratic governor and make big gains in the state legislature next year, then I will call us purple...perhaps even Blue!

but i can sort-of understand why the rule is in place to deter real fraud...

that being said, the name change policies and processes need some revisions...
