Police report uptick in frustrated rush-hour motorists waving guns

OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -
Rush-hour traffic inevitably leads routinely to rude motorists, but Overland Park police are concerned after seeing an increase in motorists waving guns when they are frustrated.

Police: Road rage incident may have sparked shooting in Overland Park

If anyone travels during rush hour in Overland Park, they know Metcalf Avenue is always busy, but what they don't expect is gunfire.

It was rush hour, Overland Park police say, about 7:30 a.m. Monday when two men got into a fit of road rage near 91st Street and Metcalf Avenue, a fit witnesses say included speeding up, slowing down and cutting each other off for 12 blocks.

Overland Park police have reported three road rage incidents involving weapons this week.

"Usually during the course of the year, we get a couple of them that involve a weapon, but given we've had three in a week, that's serious," said Overland Park Police Department spokesman Gary Mason.

Jess Worton was charged this week with aggravated assault. He is accused of firing at a car at 79th Street and Metcalf Avenue during the morning rush hour last week. A car not involved in the altercation was struck by a bullet.

Two days after Worton allegedly fired a weapon, a woman called police to report a passenger in another vehicle had pointed a gun at her.

On Saturday, a woman said a driver pointed a weapon at her while she was traveling near Interstate 435 and Metcalf. The woman had small children in the vehicle with her. Chad Schaffer has been charged with aggravated assault in connection with that incident.

I mean really. A responsible, law-abiding gun owner would never threaten another motorist with their weapon just because they're frustrated and angry. Being frustrated and angry never leads people to crimes of passion like manslaughter.
