This ossified asshole said, in public no less, on The Daily Show Monday night, as an argument against women in the military.
I just now got around to watching the show.
Wow..it is like sexism was never a concept.

(20,277 posts)Aside from a stupid argument against women in the military, it's just stupid on the face of it.
Chronological age and the ability to reproduce doesn't make a person a man or woman. I know a couple of people of both sexes, well into their 30s that should still be considered boys and girls. Accomplishment has nothing to do with it either.

(1,944 posts)are all women that are not grandmas.
I hate the term girls for women over the age of 18 and it grates me that I find many women doing this - why - probably because they had moronic asswipes like this professor in college.

but, even at 40 a woman hardly gets to be a woman cause that is like calling her old. you know, an insult. so they call her a lady.

(110,159 posts)a womans worth is her looks. that is ALL she is expected or demanded to "accomplish". when she looses her looks as she ages, she is a woman. hence, the negative connotation (i believe unconsciously) to the word woman.
from the time a baby girl breathes her first breath, it is always about her look. look how beautiful she is, as if that is her accomplishment.
a boy on the other hand gets... look at him run, look at his energy, look at him pump that fist. the language for him is "do". it is always about what he does. his accomplishment is in what he does.
(i gained some insight here, lol, i will share at the end)
so, being a man is the goal. (as opposed to being a woman is the goal. a woman resists). the man does at a young age to gain the title.
but, what i just realized is we hear often enough. a man "can't" say he loves you, he shows you. i have often said this about my husband. that his love is in the contual stuff, little and big, that he does for me. i may not get it in words, but i certainly get it in stuff he does and it behooves me to take not.
no fuckin' wonder why men have naturally gone toward doing, as opposed to saying, to show their love. wow.

(112 posts)The thinking is that a girls proof that she is a woman is clearly demonstrated when she starts her first menstration. She is clearly an adult as she can clearly produce a child. The boy on the other hand, is held to higher standard. He is expected to produce for his woman and any children she concieves. Therefore, he has to go "face the lion" and sometimes that isn't just a metaphor.
It's an old concept. I'm not sure how well it works any more. Women use to get their menstration at 14 or later, and were married soon after, and I'm sure that doesn't work.
I also think that is why among some families you see a lot of members join the armed forces.

(110,159 posts)since some girls hit menstruation at 10, you will not find many rational adults saying those GIRLS are women.
what crap.

It's very said. Men are defined by violence or the threat of violence--playing football, or shooting guns and killing things.

(37,648 posts)Not just by men, but by women themselves.
"You go, girl." "I'm one of the girls." "It's girls' night out!" "The girls and I are going to the movie, Jasper," says the 80 year old woman.
Is it a big deal? It depends. It depends if you're in a business setting, how it's said, the context, who says it.
Worse than the term "girls" is "ladies." It sounds nice. But it's not really. It's a condescending term. You pay a "the little lady" a big salary, or debate her on a stage. Those are the things that "women" do. "Ladies" are delicate, feminine, and implies domesticity. Not that there's anything wrong with those things. But "lady" is not a term you call your equal or your boss.
As for "men," they don't have to do anything to be called men. Men are men throughout their lives. "My little man." "My 13 year old son is now the Man of the House, since his father left." They're also called "guys."
It was very important that during segregation and before, black men were called "boy." They never graduated to "man," no matter what they did.
So what that jerk said is just a big, fat lie. Grrrrrr.
