NBC/WSJ poll: Gingrich leads Romney; Obama leads Romney and crushes Gingrich




Mr. McInturff's message to the GOP contenders: "You are not going to get elected simply by being the option to the president."

Mr. Hart had a similar assessment. "This is a great start for Obama with a lot of work to be done for the Republicans," he said. "The Republican primary is hurting them, and the improving economy is helping Obama."

5. But that big of a popular vote difference (Obama over Newt) would be an electoral landslide as well.

So it does mean something. For the popular vote winner to lose the outcome has to be very close. In the case of Gore/Bush I believe the margin was only 500,000 votes; essentially they were tied at 48 %. And of course there was a fairly strong third candidate showing which threw some states to Bush.
