What bigotry & stupidity looks like when morphed together.

A state representative incorrectly claimed that HIV cannot be transmitted through heterosexual sex.

Rep. Stacey Campfield told Michaelangelo Signorile on his radio show Thursday, "My understanding is that it is virtually—not completely, but virtually—impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex...very rarely [transmitted.]"

Campfield also blamed HIV being transmitted to humans by the story of a pilot who had sex with a monkey, but that mythology has been debunked, and there is no evidence of monkey-to-human sexual transmission, as Signorile writes on the Huffington Post. The story was debunked in the esteemed 2011 book, The Origin of AIDS by Jacques Pepin.

I'm sure there are many other that fit this profile. I just wanted to bring attention to this one today.

Only a man who hates women would tell a lie like that.

The HIV/AIDS epidemic is taking an increasing toll on women and girls in the United States.1,2,3 Women of color, particularly Black
women, have been especially hard hit and represent the majority of new HIV and AIDS cases among women, and the majority of women living with the disease.1 Many women with HIV/AIDS are low-income and most have important family responsibilities, potentially complicating the management of their illness. Research
suggests that women with HIV face limited access to care and experience disparities in access, relative to men.4,5,6,7 Women are also more biologically susceptible to HIV infection during sex, and experience different clinical symptoms and complications.3,8 Given these trends and issues, efforts to stem the tide of the U.S. HIV/AIDS epidemic will increasingly depend on how and to what extent its effect on women and girls is addressed.

Where AIDS continues to ravage whole populations thanks to a lethal combination of pride, arrogance, ignorance, good old-fashioned racism, and fear. Anyone who had doubts about Mr. Campfield's qualifications as a fool before he opened his mouth can now put them aside.
