My college town is in shambles, people I love are hurting, and some on DU only care about politics

I've spent the whole day trying to get in touch with loved ones and close friends at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. I've seen my beautiful university ripped to pieces. A great friend was trapped inside a building at USM when the roof caved in as the tornado hit earlier. People are trapped in their homes. Lots of friends have lost homes. One friend's home has turned into a refuge for neighbors because his house is almost the only one in the neighborhood that wasn't completely destroyed.

And then I come on DU... And I see a lot of people politicizing it, saying we don't deserve it because we are in the South and we elect Republicans, and our Congressman didn't vote for Sandy Aid (he actually did, despite the fact that he's an asshole). And I'm just so disgusted at some of the comments here-- "Payback's a bitch" and "You deserve nothing."

Hattiesburg is one of the most progressive, diverse, accepting, and wonderful places in Mississippi. It's an oasis in a sea of ignorance, poverty, and depression.

And regardless of who we elect to Congress, regardless of the ignorance, the people here are good, loving, and just like after Katrina, I've seen it in action today. People running outside before the storm was even over to help neighbors and take care of one another. People who really do believe in "love thy neighbor."

And the disconnect I witness from certain liberals here outside of my state is astounding. How can a person who calls himself or herself a liberal be so wrapped up in finding a political point in everything that you have no sense of decency, compassion, etc., that you categorize the worth and pain of people based on how they vote, and that your immediate reaction isn't compassion, but hateful political attacks?

It's just disgusting. And saddening. And hurtful. I have worked so hard along with many of my progressive friends to make this a better place, and I am so tired of progressives and liberals from outside of here looking down on us and attacking us every chance you get. It's no wonder people down here don't give liberals a chance. Because a lot of you spend all your time looking down on us with upturned noses. And your initial reaction to tragedy is hateful, political attacks?

I've been heartbroken multiple times today. I was heartbroken again when I came on here and read some of the callous comments people were making about the wonderful people of Hattiesburg in their time of need.

Video of Hardy Street as the tornado hit my university, hitting a building I had friends taking shelter in:

EDIT TO ADD: The response from the people on this thread has been really, really heartening. I'm so pleased to see that most of the people here really don't think like that at all. I guess what I ran into earlier were a few bad apples... Apples that are too ashamed to come defend themselves here. Thanks for all your comments, guys. <3

Hey, we're sympathetic in Mobile, AL--and I believe most liberals are sympathetic all over the country to your plight.

But sadly, our representatives, have acted like a-holes, refusing to sign-on to Sandy aid, while gladly accepting it for Katrina, Camille, and numerous hurricanes.

So I'd say just chalk it up to our idiot politicians. Hell I'm ashamed of ours in Alabama too. I'm not sure how Republicans got to be such incredibly hateful people, but they are, and it reflects terribly on our states.

You've always got to be able to differentiate from liberal and democratic voters, and the politicians we have in Washington. People forget that sometimes, that even in red country a lot of people are liberal.

That's why we're Democrats. None of us should have to beg for it. Let the elected officials argue, we are all supposed to be Democrats here and it is beneath DU to not act with compassion.

Especially to our members in red stated who are already having to put up with GOP jerks all year long.

For those who say, 'Why not just move?' it's not a luxury many of us can afford. Kicking members when they're already down is against our basic human values.

Mayor Dupree has been a great leader in Hattiesburg, and for anyone who thinks Hattiesburg is typical of Mississippi, we have a very large older white population, yet we have elected Mayor Dupree, a black Democrat, multiple times. He obviously lost, but we made him the Democratic Party's Gubernatorial nominee in 2011. He truly cares about our state. On the night of his concession speech, he concluded by saying, "Mississippians are some of the greatest people on earth. They deserve better than what they get." He can see the goodness here despite all the ignorance and bad electoral choices. That's why so many of us are willing to stay here and fight, because the people here are worth it.

It should not matter if we are a red, blue or purple state. It should never matter if our skin color is white, black, brown....or even pink, blue or green. Our sexual orientation should not come in to play. Our gender should not be questioned. In a disaster, how we vote should not be a deciding factor in our aid. Ever!

We, as a nation, should be helping all of our citizens. We at DU should be supportive of all our people.

That is what we should be about. If we lose our humanity, then we are dead.

Thank you for your OP, ashtonelijah.
I wish you all well in Hattiesburg.

It hurts, hurts like no one should ever know. So many keep remembering about the Sandy Aid vote and don't think about the people in general. They can not see what is truly going on in Hattiesburg right now. They can not see the people running around begging for help to dig out family that are buried alive (with luck alive) or begging for a phone to call for family. If they did, they would never say such things.

People who concentrate on looking for insults will often find them on DU and all over the web. My suggestion is that you read all the comments. You'll get a very different viewpoint.

BTW, I thought Oxford was MS's island of sanity. I know that's where the best NPR station in the south is. That station has saved what has been left of my sanity on several cross country drives.

I am sorry about USM and the residents down south. I'm in North Miss and it's already been an interesting year. As for Oxford being MS only island of sanity, I really don't think one place owns the title. Rather, there are individual people who become islands of sanity.

The same person I disagree with on politics, I can later agree with on sports. As a Mississippian, some days I hate the south. But, I find it genuinely hard to dislike the people. Some days it takes more work than others, but I try to look really hard to find common ground.

I don't really like the idea of an America divided into little divisive camps...republicans, democrats, liberals, conservatives, tea party people. It becomes so easy to denigrate instead of finding common values and solutions.

The only people who seem to benefit from this sorry state of affairs are politicians and the modern day news media, who gave up on telling us the news ages ago.

Good luck and God bless, down south! I hope you guys recover quickly, Ash. I hope everyone is okay. I'll be on the lookout for ways to lend a helping hand.

I don't have a TV, so I was not aware of this tornado.

In the early 1980's my sister lived in Hattiesburg for a couple of years, and I visited her five or six times while she was there. To be honest, I didn't get to know Hattiesburg all that well, since my focus was simply on my sister. But let me tell you about the incredible cream puffs at the Piggly Wiggly! And if there's more than one Piggly Wiggly there, alas, I cannot tell you which one it was.

I like to say that we live in a wonderful country with fifty wonderful states. While there are some that you could not pay me to live in, others love those states, and couldn't be paid to live in the ones I like. There are wonderful, good, and friendly people everywhere.

One of the things I loved about Mississippi when I visited my sister, were the fabulous water parks. You still have them, I hope. For those of you who don't know about them, the water parks are essentially state parks with some kind of a water feature, generally a decent sized lake. Usually there's boating and fishing and whatever other water sports are appropriate. The scenery was just gorgeous.

Anyone who has never seen the destruction tornadoes cause just have no idea. There's a town in Kansas, Greensburg, which was hit by a tornado on May 4, 2007. It was an F-5, the strongest tornado. I had several times in the years right before the tornado driven through Greensburg. It was just a wide spot in the road, quite frankly. Then I drove through two months after the tornado. The approach to the town was coming up a hill, and when I crested the hill I saw the damage and my mouth fell open and didn't close for at least fifteen minutes. It was as if the tornado had struck the day before.

Here's a picture taken twelve days later, and trust me, six weeks later there hadn't been any rebuilding yet.

I happened to drive through Greensburg several times over the next four years, and watched it rebuild. Hattiesburg will do the same.

And even though, as I said above, there are places you could not pay me to live in, if any one of those places gets struck by tornado or hurricane or earthquake or anything else, it is our DUTY as citizens of this country, to help each other out.

Some people have a hard time discerning the difference between facts, half truths, fiction, support, anger, maturity, childishness, having a point, forcing a point, standing firm, stubbornness, refusing to learn, listening, hearing, being true and being fake.

All that said, we all have to approach each other with a certain amount of "benefit of the doubt" so we have a chance to see each other for what we are individually. Otherwise we end up making those oversimplified and unrealistic put-downs, becoming cynical instead of seeing each others joys, needs and suffering.

I hope to see a day when we can support each other in reason and honesty instead of speaking through a screen of resentment.

I think too many people today seem to think they're the only ones who ever deserve any help, sympathy, compassion, and understanding. But I've seen the result of one mild tornado here in Queens and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

With climate change, disasters are going to be more frequent and more disastrous. If we don't stand together to save every one of us we can, America won't survive into the next century.

What is nationhood but a compact to help each other survive whatever evil befalls us?

We became a nation by forming communities, by reaching out to each other in time of need. We rallied to Paul Revere. We rushed supplies to still smoking Chicago. We drove all night to dig out the World Trade Center.

What happened over Sandy must never happen again.

We are Americans. That means we agree to stand together in time of trouble no matter what our disagreements about anything else.

I, too, am sadden by anyone whose reaction to a tragedy of any kind is that it is deserved. Most people on DU feel the same, I suspect. It is unfortunate that our politicians, the media, corporations, and the wealthy want to turn us against each other for their own ends.

Feb 2013

I don't think I have seen the thread you are refering to.

Hope everyone is found alive and that very quickly, the damage assertained, and the money released quickly to rebuild. Compassion for all in all states.

I am from New Jersey, and have two friends in Mississippi, and have been in the state three times, always feeling welcome (can't say that about some other states).

States should not be pitted against states at all. However, politics in a sense does come into play, because of people's attitudes about what government should and should not do, some parts of the elected officials don't want government to do a damned thing to help anyone
(so its not the people themselves, but the elected leaders. (The Tea party philosophy is less than 20% of the nation, but has very vocal elected people from that party, and the do-nothing whatsoever is their party, and it is not only in the south, as Wisconsin is way up North).
and I have been saying, let's make every state blue, I do not see why the entire south cannot again be blue like it was for LBJ and like it was for Jimmy Carter. And like it can be again in 2016 (according to polls Hillary is going to win at least 5 or 6 now red states, some very red states).

In states that are the poorest economically, I just do not understand why the people who vote for republicans do that. It is against everything that can help. The democratic party can offer so much more help.
There should be great heavily financed candidates that are democratic in every single district througout the south.

Katrina showed both the devastation of Mother Nature, and storms the last decade all over are getting worse and worse (climate change) and Katrina showed the horrible racism still at play in the USA, the rightwing stressing the non-existent riots, and the first whispered, then fact, then jailtime for the cops on Danzinger Bridge who killed any black person attempting just to reach the dry land on the other side.Katrina for all intents and purposes politically was an ethnic cleansing, of one specific people out of the state, and changing a 50-50 state to
at best 65-35.imho

Hate to go political but in a sense, it is all connected because these storms are not just randomly just happening to get worse and worse than ever, it is the climate change and the differences of the two parties on this specific issue (where one side completely ignores it, says it doesn't exist, and votes everything down or threatens to, and, the audacity in 2000 of Nader the Green 3rd partyist saying Gore and Bush were the same, just on the environment issue alone.
And the unseating of Jimmy Carter in 1980.

If only everyone in enough numbers had come out and rallied behind him in a fractured democratic party, how much better off the USA would be.

Let's turn Mississippi and everywhere else blue

And the same aid should be given instantly in all 50 states when tragedy occurs. It should be as quick as possible, and rebuilding should be done as quick as possible.
It is in storms where people see tax dollars being used.

(while we my area were spared the 5 feet of snow some in Mass got, we still got 15 inches by Saturday morning, and our local taxes sent the plows in early Saturday and the streets were 100% cleared of any piece of snow at least in our town, which people complain at times in town, of too high taxes (state and property).

But in storms, it shows why they are needed.
More taxes=more services. There is not a person in our town that wasn't during Sandy,
thrilled to see any sign of the government at work during the 9 days power was out.

Not everything needs to be turned into a political, balkanized, polarized issue, and this is where at times the "liberals" and "progressives" here seem to be no better than the conservatives that they mock and criticize every day.

I knew a storm had hit Hattiesburg, but I was not aware it was this bad. I hope you and your friends got through it okay, and you get the help you and your city need in the coming days.

Mon Feb 11, 2013, 06:55 AM
Feb 2013

If a reaction to another human being suffering is "that is OTHER, not like me, deserves destruction" then we are seeing the reptilian brain in action. "That is someone like me, could happen to me, deserves help" is a mammalian brain response to others in distress. I know it's an oversimplification and pop psych, but it's the only thing that gives me a handle on the inhumanity of humans.

In times of emergencies such as this we are Americans first, willing to come to the aid of our fellow citizens. This is what I found in the Democratic party and why I am not still a Repiblican. I agree with what you've said:

"And the disconnect I witness from certain liberals here outside of my state is astounding.

And your initial reaction to tragedy is hateful, political attacks?"

You call it a disconnect. I call it hypocrisy.

Fortunately, as you can see reading through the link, there are people, on DU and in the real world, that DO care.

But you need to admit that we cannot continually bless or overlook the sociopathic tendencies of the red state representatives. How do you suggest we make them understand that their actions have consequences? It is pretty common knowledge that, as a general rule, the more a state "takes" from the treasury, the redder it is likely to be. We put up with that as part of life - more goes to the impoverished areas, as it should be. But SOMETHING needs to be done about the partisan hatred that permeates the governance of the men & women who vote against Sandy aid.

Best wishes to all of the decent people affected by the storms. Please think of voting out the psychos next fall.

138. When the south stops voting in these nut jobs....
Mon Feb 11, 2013, 11:37 AM
Feb 2013

and unleashing them on the rest of us.... maybe us "liberals" won't feel contempt for those who elect them.

In the mid to late 1960's I was stationed in the south. I do have some fond memories of that time.

BUT for the most part I remember the racist hatred I observed whenever I left the base. I remember the oft spoken phrase "the south shall rise again" I remember seeing the "rebel flag" flying over the stars and stripes. I remember the social oppression forced on those who had less and had no way to advance.

On my discharge I remember crossing the Mason Dixon Line on my way home to New England and thinking well at least this "damn yankee" was glad to be done with that.

My fond memories pop-up occasionally usually when I'm fishing. I really enjoyed fishing on Lake Santee Cooper. I have thought of going back. Many times I have thought that things surely must have changed in the south in the last 30-40 years. Nothing has changed! NOTHING! Racism and oppression of minorities is still rampant.

Those with power still hate. Those with power in the south still hate all of us damn yankee liberals.

Those with power talk about succession. Here is a news flash this is the United States of America.

If we are united there is nothing we can't overcome. Including natural disasters.

So you need to rid yourselves of the "the earth is 6000 years old"... "there is no evolution"... "there is no climate change"... "the bible says"... "real rape"..... "vaginal probes"... "voter suppression" etc etc ........... f...ing nut jobs and join the 21st century with the rest of the United States.

Having said that. When a hurricane (Sandy) hits the middle eastern coast and their towns, homes and lives are in a shamble we all should help with IMMEDIATE federal relief dollars. When a tornado touches down in Mississippi we all should help with the same federal relief dollars. That is the role of government.

That could rival the south that still continues to this day. We pretend we are beyond that but it s our dirty secret. The nypd patrols certain areas more to make sure the lesser know their place. Mississippi is the poorest state (by some measures) and has the highest African-American percentage. One thing I've noticed about liberals here and on other "progressive" forums is that they can go off into tirades of hatred of the Deep South on the basis that if "we" got rid of "them" and "their" poverty and ignorance, what a wonderful rich and progressive country "we" would have.

A lot fewer blacks and Hispanics in their "progressive, prosperous" fantasy America, too.

posters should apologize for lumping all southerners into one basket or assuming everyone in the south is ignorant.

I grew up in SC, and I'm pretty ashamed of the way some of my old friends and relatives act when they are racist or doing their tea party things.

On the other hand, there are some really good progressive people in the south and all across this country. I worked for Richard Riley in SC in the early 1980's, and he was a good Democratic governor. SC elected him in 1978 and reelected him for a second term before he became Clinton's Secretary of Education. I discovered that even SC can be "liberal" if the right people step forward.

I'm sure that Mississippi is the same way. If you keep on working, you'll have successes.

No one deserves a disaster, and I'm sorry to hear that some DUer's would be so callous.

I often (Too often, frankly) marvel at people who proudly call themselves liberals, and then bash a place they don't even have much real experience with. Isn't part of being 'liberal' Being Open To places/people/things other than What You Know?

I have family, and friends in Mississippi, and it's always Good being in Mississippi, for me. I think more people should actually visit / learn more about places they're not very familiar with, rather than quickly slamming them on online forums. It'd be like me slamming California or NYC because I've never been, and don't know a ton about them -- well, ok, been to NYC for one day: business meetings.

And to those Dawgs fans out there, I get to my sister in law's house in Starkville at least once a year. Great town, great times with family.
