We won't even get to enjoy the snow

This is for all you people saying us New Englanders are just whiners because Minnesota and Illinois, etc, get big snow all the time.

BULLSHIT. Not like this.

I lived in Norwood, MA during the blizzards of 77-78. I've been out west for at least three major storms. Snow that lasted for days and dumped 3-4 feet. You Westerners saying this is "normal," and that we're just whining, forget that while this may be normal for you, what we're experiencing now in CT is not normal. Nor are the 50-70mph winds.

Seven people are dead in CT because of this. I've spent my entire weekend, with six people, a snowblower, and even a Bobcot, clearing my driveway.

Many streets are still not cleared. Not even touched by a plow. You say it's because we're pussies, but that ain't it! I compare this to my big-storm experiences in the Sierras...they're used to this! They have massive snowblower/plows. Four feet of snow? Meh.

But this isn't the Sierras! This is Connecticut! We don't have those giant plows and snowblowers. We're not pussies. We haven't had appreciable snow in a couple of years! We're digging out with shovels and pickup trucks with plows!

Sure, it's New England, and it snows here. But where I live, it hasn't snowed like this since the 1800's!

Tomorrow, it's going to rain. Rain on the snow. Then freezing rain. We're talking collapsing roofs and crashing cars.

My point is, we're hearty New Englanders, for sure. But this was NOT a Western snow storm. And tomorrow it will get worse.

I'm in Southern Westchester (just north of the city) and am not looking forward to walking to the train in around an hour or so. Ice will not be turning to rain until after 9 or so. This was NOT a regular snow storm. I also just saw our friends in Connecticut are going to be dealing with train problems also...parts of the CT line are still down.

That's after we got about a foot of snow. I am trapped at home -- everything's fine here -- and we're going to get more rain, freezing rain, then more snow (hopefully, not much).

And all this is headed to those poor people on the east coast.

This stuff is nothing to shrug off.

It doesn't often get this serious.

After this insane snowstorm, now we get that warm weather rain...which also means 3' of snow suddenly melting. Can you say "flooding?" it's going to be messy.

to get that much in one storm and I hope that you can all make it through, especially the stuff that's coming. I have said that we get that sort of weather regularly including the winds, up here in the Rockies (but that's to be expected up here) but I don't recall calling anyone whiners or anything like that blizzard do what they do and the amount of adverse affect depends on where they happen. (I grew up in northern NE and have seen some doosies there.) I am sure that among all of that there will be significant damage to the trees of the region if not from this just passed storm, most certainly from the ice storm on its way. I feel for you all, have friends and family out that way and it's not been fun for most. It's just a bad deal, especially so soon after the last big storm on Hallowe'en.

Take care! Hope it isn't as bad as predicted.

Not exactly a pretty picture though...

I know zilch about snow...but strong winds, I know, can be super destructive.

I never bothered to dig out and was stuck at home for a month. Finally took a hair dryer to the wheels of my car to melt the ice they were frozen in and put carpets up and down my driveway so I could get into the street, heh. Good times. I had to pick a friend up at the airport, she was not from around here.

Thank goodness it was not like that time it snowed after thanksgiving and didn't thaw until March. That was a weird year for NJ. It was funny because all the Christmas decorations were frozen into the snow, the next year we had no snow. It is so random, you don't really know what to do.

I hope you recover from all this hard labor and the weather passes with little damage. Having been trying to push this heavy snow all day, I feel your pain. Literally.
