where do you stand on this trans-gender kid?

Dispute on Transgender Rights Unfolds at a Colorado School

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/18/us/in-colorado-a-legal-dispute-over-transgender-rights.html?hp

“It became really clear that it wasn’t just about liking pink or feminine things,” said Kathryn Mathis, Coy’s mother, recounting how Coy had anxiety attacks when people treated her as a boy. “It was that she was trying so hard to show us that she was a girl.”

In December, however, when Coy, 6, was a few months into the first grade, the Mathises angrily pulled her out of school after being told that she could no longer use the girls’ bathroom but could instead use a gender-neutral restroom.

A letter from a lawyer for the Fountain-Fort Carson school district explained that “as Coy grows older and his male genitals develop along with the rest of his body, at least some parents and students are likely to become uncomfortable with his continued use of the girls’ restroom.”

Kid should be allowed to use the girl's restroom only after the surgical removal of the penis and the construction of an artificial Vagina.

2. I'm an elementary teacher. All restrooms in every school I've ever worked in are monitored.

This is a non issue. Shame on the school for even implying it is wrong to let her use the girl's restroom.

10. Kids never go to the restroom alone. They are always accompanied by their teacher or another adult.

No, we don't stand in the restroom and watch them. But we are right outside.

So it's ridiculous and downright hateful to imply that something bad is going to happen if this girl is allowed to use the restroom.

The grown ups are getting involved and creating the problem. Leave her alone and let her go potty in peace.

They are going to make the kid feel bad by telling her gender neutral. This kid has a long road ahead, no need to start the bs now.

5. The child is 6 YO. Her parents should have registered her as a girl and if anyone asked

about her protruding appendage; the question to ask is
" what were you doing in her pants?"?

however, she was not being forced to use the boy's bathroom so your poll isn't accurate.

It would be totally be a non-issue.

But the woman in the above photograph looked like this when she was a girl:

So this restroom problem was an issue for her, too.

She's still the same person that she was as a child, but one difference is that, now, nobody complains when she uses the women's restroom.

11. Looks like a girl to me. In such cases, the penis is an error contradicting innate mental gender.

Should have been re-enrolled as a 'she.' Name change, all of that, awaiting the surgery to repair the problem for her. Is there some law in Colorado saying the child couldn't have papers to that effect?

TG in my family had the birth certificate, driver's license, etc. changed to reflect gender as it turned out to be, not as stated on the original birth certificate.

Leaving school hurts socialization.

Forcing her to go to the boy's room with urinals would be wrong and damaging. The girl's room has privacy with stalls. Some may not want to admit it, but some boys sit down and take a pee like a girl, too.

No one would have noticed a thing, and the girls wouldn't object, even if there weren't hormones given to stunt the effects of testerone on appearance, since some girls and women have mannish looks.

The child already knows she doesn't want to use a penis like a boy in the rest room and doesn't want to be a boy. So using the girl's room, or better yet, in case of questions, the teacher's restroom would have worked.

In my public school years there were kids with medical conditions that meant they couldn't participate in physical education classes. This is a case that requires adults to protect this child, not politicize her condition.

I just don't believe that gender should determine anything until a child is in puberty. I don't think there should be girl or boy things, just things. I know this is a very old fashioned attitude. Maybe all bathrooms should be ungendered in grammar school. Why push something that could change or not. Kids should just be kids without having to deal with adult issues at 6.

13. When a child identifies this strongly at such a young age

When a child identifies this strongly at such a young age, follow the child's lead. Let them be monitored by specialists in the field. As the probability is high they will remain in their identified gender and given proper treatment as they grow to adulthood will lead normal lives. Being almost indistinguishable from anyone else of their gender.

Coy's legal ID says Female. Unless you were told, in any normal interaction, you would be unable to tell she is anything other than a typical 6yr old girl. What would be strange is seeing this little girl use anything other than the ladies restroom.

to see who said the kid was a boy. It appears that one of those people is the same one ridiculing a long time DUer for not having English as a first language, and appears to be a big fan of RBKA.

Fascinating how people eloquently state who they are without having to make too many statements.
