A husband, who was under investigation in the 2009 disappearance of his wife, today apparently killed himself and his two young children in a gas explosion at his home.
Josh Powell greeted his sons for a supervised visit before bundling them inside the Washington state home and blocking a social worker from entering. Moments later an explosion ripped through the rental home in Graham, killing Powell and his two boys, aged five and seven. A lawyer for Josh Powell says he received a three-word email from his client just minutes before Powell and sons Charlie and Braden died in a house explosion. It said, 'I'm sorry, goodbye.'
It is a horrific end to a long, bizarre tale. Josh Powell was under investigation in the disappearance of his 28-year-old wife Susan from their West Valley City, Utah, home in December 2009. He claimed he had taken the boys on a midnight excursion in freezing temperatures when she vanished. Attorney Jeffrey Bassett tells The Associated Press the email arrived at 12:05 p.m. Sunday, but he didn't see it until two hours later, when others informed him of the blast.
He says he knew Josh was upset after being ordered to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation recently, but he didn't see this coming.
Powell's brother-in law Kirk Graves, 39, of West Jordan, Utah, said the family was stunned by the news.
'We never contemplated the idea he would do something like this. You just don't expect it from a father,' he said.
'His world was falling apart around him and he was going to lose his boys and get arrested for Susan's disappearance.
He told the Salt Lake Tribune that he takes the explosion as an admission of guilt in Susan's case. 'In my personal opinion this is Josh's admission, that he did it. I know others won't interpret it that way.'
Steve Downing, a lawyer for Susan Powell's parents Chuck and Judy Cox said: 'It's the most horrifying thing you can imagine happening.'
'They are beyond devastated. They always feared Josh would do something like this.'
The children, five-year-old Braden and seven-year-old Charles, had been living with their maternal grandparents.

(9,186 posts)Suicide is usually what one sees as their ONLY option to their situation.
their only option. To simply lable this person as a coward shows ignorance.
I've had coworkers say suicide is the cowards or easy way out for these people.
Wow, again, how ignorant a statement. Oh, and these werre healthcare workers!
Those poor, innocent boys taken to visit their father and his only way out of this custody battle, this shadow hanging over him of suspision of killing his wife...the only way out is to kill himself and his sons.
do not simplify this with a cheap label, too many people do that and it solves nothing.

(27,630 posts)And we don't know for sure he killed his wife, but, he probably did since we know he was able to kill his kids.
Ain't nobody getting custody of his kids now! That is what he wanted.
