CBS/WWJ/AP) DETROIT - A 19-year-old man and his mother have been charged in connection to the shooting death of 12-year-old honor roll student Kade'jah Davis, allegedly over a missing cell phone.
Davis' mother, Amanda Talton, told the Detroit Free Press a man came to her home in northwest Detroit believing she had a phone that belonged to another woman. Talton denied she had it and closed the door. That's when shots were fired through the door hitting her daughter, Kade'jah, multiple times.
Less than 6 hours after the shooting, police say they arrested Joshua Brown and his mother Heather, 35, who allegedly drove him away from the scene.
Joshua Brown has been charged with first degree murder and his mother has been charged with accessory after the fact, CBS Detroit reports. Both pleaded not guilty.
Joshua Brown is held without bail and bond was set at $50,000 for his mother, CBS Detroit reports.

(24,331 posts)Most people aren't aware violent crime in America has actually been going down continuously for almost 20 years; the country is now safer than it's been since the 1960s. The difference is, you SEE more stories like this because they're treated as national news, not local news. It's kind of like missing pretty blond girl syndrome. That, combined with the way the human brain perceives reports of violence, ensures that you perceive the world as worse off and more violent even if it's not.

(28,799 posts)but i really wonder. 4 suicides due to bullying already this year. this. the homicide report in the LA Times...i'm from LA and while i lived there, after my daughter was killed, was active in a group Justice for Murdered Children. i still keep in touch with my JFMC family and i can tell you, in LA if they say the rate of violent crime has been declining for 20 years i'm tempted to say they are lying, they are dicking around the numbers, i don't know how they can make such a claim.
when i say hell in a handbasket i'm not just talking about violent crime, or senseless violent crime over trivia. imo we are a terribly fucked up country in a myriad of ways.
