Santorum Longs For Good Old Days Of ‘Shadow Abortions’ When Women Obtained Back-Alley Procedures

Santorum Longs For Good Old Days Of ‘Shadow Abortions’ When Women Obtained Back-Alley Procedures
By Amanda Peterson Beadle on Feb 6, 2012 at 5:10 pm

On the campaign trail, Republican Rick Santorum has made attacking the Affordable Care Act a cornerstone of his stump speech. During an event on Friday, the former Pennsylvania senator supported a “death panels” claim that stroke patients over the age of 70 “will not be granted treatment” under President Obama’s health care reform plan. The claim is false, according to Health and Human Services officials, but Santorum said that “when you become a cost, then the government starts to allocate resources.”

Santorum warned that the United States could follow the way of the Netherlands, where, he (incorrectly) claimed euthaniasia represts “10 percent of all deaths.” He also bemoaned women’s access to safe and legal abortion services:

Look at what’s happened just in our tolerance for abortion. Fifty years ago…60 years ago, people who did abortions were in the shadows, people who were considered really bad doctors. Now, abortion is something to that is just accepted.
............ This is the erosion. And it happens in the medical profession. It happened very fast. And I think Obamacare will lead us down that road.

They have no filter for their illogical thought process. Seriously this reads like he didn't think through what he was saying or he really does think it is better that women risk their lives to get an abortion or they pay a very high price to get one or pay an even higher price if they don't. Seriously, they are trying to eliminate the safety net while at the same time trying to guarantee that millions more people will need a safety net.

at the hands of bad doctors. How could any female support this man.

And this statement just backs up the fact that abortion has always been with us. It's not some new medical procedure created by liberals. The question is do you want it to be safe? Or do you believe women should be punished?

about the bad old days!

We need to remind folks and educate the younger folks! I'm sure many of them don't know how many women were maimed, died, or barely survived illegal abortions.

time for a new documentary on those days, played to wide audiences, esp. young women!

She became a Nurse and was working for a country Doctor in her home town. One Saturday evening the Doctor came for her and they went out to a farm house to care for a young Woman who had gone out of state for a "back alley" abortion, my Mother described how the Woman's belly was profoundly swollen. She stayed at the patients side and cared for her for 3 days. The Young Woman got well, later married and had children without complication.
My Mother was a Republican but had very modern views on issues we still argue about. She felt Prostitution should be legal because when it is sex crimes are greatly diminished. She thought drugs should be controlled as a medical issue rather than a legal issue, she had worked on the Hawaii Plantations as a Nurse and administered opium to the old Chinese men who were addicted.
She also felt Euthanasia, what we would call death with dignity should be the social norm. And lastly abortion and anything involving a Woman's body should be the decision of that Woman and her Doctor. Legal, safe abortion should always be available when necessary to any Woman who needs the procedure. My Mother has spoken, keep it so.
