but not now. Feb 1 2015
the GOP is going to try and block him from getting anything done legislatively anyways.
so heres my idea.
being the incumbent president has a lot of advantages in an election.
so Obama resigns on feb 1 2015 in favor of biden.
biden then goes into 2016 as the incumbent with all the advantages
under the constitution since Biden would have served less than 2 years of Obamas term he would still be eligible to serve 2 full terms.
so he could run in 2016 and 2024. and hopefully by then the dems would have such a demographic advantage we wouldnt have much to worry about from teh GOP after that

(9,612 posts)22nd Amendment says "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once."
Resignation or not, Obama has been elected twice and is barred from being elected again.

(52,259 posts)actually, the repugs have zero say in the matter. if obama resigns, biden would become president automatically. there's nothing republicans could possibly do to stop it, short of somehow amending the constitution prior to it happening.

(52,259 posts)sure, they could and would continue to say no to any and all democratic legislation and appointments. so what?
a president biden would still be able to wield executive power and would, by definition, appear presidential, avoiding the way that vice-presidents inevitably appear as "junior" or "number 2" or "cheerleader not leader".
of course it wouldn't make biden able to achieve anything legislatively obama couldn't, but it would almost undeniably help him win the election in 2016.
as i posted below, though, presidents simply don't think this way and would never resign something they fought so hard to get for a mere possibility of helping a fellow party member.

(52,259 posts)effective than a first biden year, especially with biden getting the office without being explicitly voted in.
it would only be useful as a gamble, if it made the difference between biden winning in 2016 vs. not.
of course, if it did work, biden would be president for 5 or 9 years rather than 4 or 8, and that extra year might well make his overall tenure more effective.
though again, all this is idle speculation, Obama wouldn't dream of resigning.

(14,120 posts)But President Obama is the type to keep going. He is not a "quitter" as some of the GOP history re-writers would class him as if he did this.

(52,259 posts)it only sometimes LOOKS like they work in their party's interest. in truth, politicians work in their party's interest only when it serves their own selfish interests.
so if obama resigns before his term is up, what's in it for him?
presidents have NEVER thought this way. this opportunity has come up time and again and so far the only president to have resigned was nixon, and he certainly didn't do it to give ford a leg up in the next election.

(3,003 posts)First off, if Obama were to resign it would have a very negative effect on the Democratic Party and all of our accomplishments since 2009. Second, Biden will be far too old to serve two terms beginning in 2017.

Chained CPI. Appointing billionaires to be the watchdog over billionaires. Accelerating trade agreements that grow our trade deficit and send jobs overseas.
Get any Democrat in there over Obama. I'll take Biden in a heartbeat over Obama.

(10,893 posts)Obama being the 1st president to endorse gay marriage? Fair Pay Act? Auto bailout? Tax cut extension for lower-class Americans? Health care reform? Unemployment and the deficit lowering? Two wars being drawn down and no major terrorist attacks?
It's all about CPI. CPI. CPI...never mind that it wasn't his ideal budget plan, and that it has no chance of passing anyway; the Republicans don't want to see top taxes increased or tobacco tax hikes towards universal pre-school. And for someone who has "betrayed" the Left and is supposedly eager to eliminate entitlements, what has been taking him so freaking long to do it? He has had an opposition that is more than happy to help him with that.
I can't believe that even after all that has been accomplished by Obama since 2009 in spite of obstruction, you're still willing to toss him to the wolves like that over something that hasn't even been ENACTED and has zero chance of passing. That is very short-sighted of you.

(10,611 posts)The GOP doesn't like having a black president? So the black president should resign and send the message that no else of color should try running because the GOP won't work with them.
Bullshit.
The obstructionists need to be voted out, not placated.

(3,290 posts)Republicans would block any nomination to fill the vacant Vice-Presidency. They would then try to impeach Biden. If they succeeded at impeachment, the Presidency would pass to the Speaker of the House, John Boehner.
You need a better plan, my friend.
treestar
(82,383 posts)Why would you want to see that? Biden would be better off running as the most recent VP. And there is no way we want the first black president to resign. Appalling that you'd want that (and you probably do).
