Meet Otis! His pregnant mama was rescued from a bad life on the street and I got him as a friend for my 1 year-old rescue, Sammy. I have another cat, Nigel, who's an 18 year-old grouch and I could tell that Sammy was lonely. I got Otis on Friday afternoon. I named him Otis, after the elevator company. He is a real climberup and down the cat tree and especially my pant leg, LOL. You should see the scratches on my leg until he figured out that skin doesnt give him as much traction as fabricOUCH! Its only been a few days, but Otis has the potential of being one of the 5 greatest cats Ive ever lived with. Hes truly a special little guy. This is probably TMI, but every time I go to the bathroom when hes awake, he runs in there with me. The weird thing is, if I use the facilities, he jumps into the litterbox and uses the facilities, if I go in there to brush my teeth or comb my hair, he just hangs out at my feet. Ive NEVER seen a cat do that. Hes my little shadow, but has become fast friends with Sammy, just as Id hoped. It took her about 24 hours to warm up to him, but I woke up on Saturday morning to a stampede on my head, with Sammy in the lead. Nigel is the typical grouch, growling & slapping Otis AND Sammy whenever they get too close, so I think Sammy will be much happier. Kittens are awesome!

(34,484 posts)Love the name too. He looks like one happy guy lounging in the sun. When my husband & I had our house, we encased an upstairs porch in chicken wire & turned it into the "cat deck". It looked out over a grape arbor that many furry & feathered visitors would frequent, and the cats just loved it. That was the one thing I missed when we sold the house after my husband became too ill to manage a 2-story, 3-bedroom house and we had to downsize.

(39,191 posts)I had a company that made one that fit in a standard window made of reinforced wire mesh they could lay in but can't find it now.
But I will

p.s. Otis is adorable!
edited to add: built just for my own 3 kitties, not as a business to the public

(34,484 posts)Now they are all over the place. I wish my apartment had the capability to put a greenhouse window in or something. The only thing I can give the guys now is a carpeted kitty perch.

(5,376 posts)Because he has white paws, I named him Bustopher Jones for the character in the musical Cats--Bustopher Jones in White Spats. He and several others who've found their way to our Cat Cafeteria can't come into our house (our Julius and Gracie don't approve), but I do provide them with food, water and the occasional kitty cuddles. My version of "foster catting".
Like Digit, our Gracie loves her sun spots! Thanks for the photo. Love it!

I'm such a sucker for tabbies. Otis is a very handsome one.

(16,993 posts)What a handsome cat! I had a cat that would go into the bathroom on cold winter mornings to take advantage of the steam from the shower. He would groom himself while the shower was running.
I'm sure Otis will be a great friend, and bring you many years of happiness, love, and companionship. What a lucky guy to have found a good forever home!
Best wishes to both of you!

(81,527 posts)I'm the "food god" most of the time (I'm the main one who feeds them and cleans up after them). Husband and I have taken to calling the commode "the petting seat" because that's what they come in to do: get petted.
Love Otis! He's a keeper, for sure! Congratulations! A thread here by DUer DonRedwood talked about how wonderful their new kitty is and what a lovely difference he's made in their lives - even while so small, and deaf.
Check it out! It's as dear as can be!

(34,484 posts)I got Otis "mid-lick" when he was grooming, then about 30 seconds later he keeled over, dead to the world, LOL. I just love their zest for life--everything is so new and exciting to them. I bought a Scottish Fold in 1986, but the rest of our cats have been rescues--my husband & I have had over 30 cats in our adult life, most living to a ripe old age, and I've lived with cats all my life. I have a picture of my mom, hugely pregnant with me, with our tuxedo cat, Geraldine, stretched out over her belly, purring. So I guess I've loved cats even before birth!
Thank you all for your good wishes. I'm at my office right now on my lunch break, and I just can't wait to get home to see him--and Nigel & Sammy, of course!

(27,454 posts)Looks like he's settled right in.
He looks a lot like my Scully that was rescued off the streets when she was a few weeks old. It took her some time to settle in but once she did she was like a little puppy following me around everywhere. 13 years later she's still my little shadow.
Otis looks quite content. Good on you for taking him in.

(5,106 posts)As for your TMI, only one of our current three cats always joins us in the bathroom. We keep a litter box in there, and often she just scratches around in it, but she always shows up or lies outside if the door's closed. I've had one or two others over the years who have done so. Maddie has also been rejuvenated by a new kitten we got last year, Our resident grump, though only about twelve, does her best to ignore the others.

(111,382 posts)That's my kinda cat. You're going to need a squirt gun for some behavior modification, though. When he scales the curtains now, it's funny. When he tries it five pounds from now, he'll bring the whole thing crashing down. You kinda want to prevent that.
catbyte
(34,484 posts)Best behavior modification ever. No need to actually squirt it anymore. All I have to do is pick it up and everybody scrams. I feel a little bad, but it works and doesn't really traumatize them.
Warpy
(111,382 posts)One of them was loaded into the plunger gizmo and I took it out of my pocket just in time to see my old tomcat doing something he shouldn't do with the squirt gun on the other side of the room.
I drilled him right in the back of the head with that saline and he was so shocked he managed a triple back flip!
I have never seen a cat accomplish that before or since.
I wish I'd had a video camera in the other hand, it was spectacular.

(11,925 posts)Got that all knowing look, too
My cat bear is my white shadow everywhere, however Sparkle is my bathroom monitor.
Some cats just GOT to be where you are. My cats stick to me like white fur on black polyester fleece.
They are ALWAYS in the same room often within petting reach.bear especially is right next to me even now as I type.
They get upset when I gotta put them out of a room I'm in like when I use certain art supplies,or I have to fully concentrate or finishes I don't want them exposed to. Paws under the door pitiful meowing. when it's fine detail art I',stuff they could mess up,stuff they might wanna lick,m doing or varnishing I put my headphones on.
They do not fuck with any of my art supplies, walk across my keyboard, they've learned do not touch. But they like to watch me. they actually come when called. I loves my kitties more than anyone. I tell my human friends to not take that personally because no human on earth can equal the sheer cuteness and coolness of the felines..
A cat can become the best friend you EVER have.
I hope Otis finds that cat shaped place in your heart and stays there. Because he seems to be one of those immortal forever in your heart kinda cats.

(23,156 posts)Right now I am bereft of cats. I used to have three, and they departed, one by one. I miss them all. Someday I will have cats again, but right now I want to do a lot of travelling, and that's a bit tricky when you're responsible for other creatures.
And the best cats are the rescued ones. My three cats were all rescues of some sort: the first one came from an animal shelter, the second from my vet (she was a rescue) and the third, perhaps the most precious of all, showed up on our front porch one day in the middle of a heat wave, starving and flea-infested, determined that we would be her family. I loved them all, and I miss them all.

(5,376 posts)I love your story, and as a writer (who knows good writing when I see it), I hope you're sharing your words with other than DUers. There are Cat magazines that I'm betting would welcome your articles. They're what I like to call Publication Worthy. Think about it, but by all means, continue to keep posting your Cat Tales here. They certainly brighten my days!
Blessings.
