Take the Basic Freedom Defense Fund, a 501(c) (4) organization based in Durango, Colorado, a small town in the state’s southwestern corner.

The organization’s website has an obligatory, glancing reference to “public education” but then it goes on to say that its mission is “more importantly, recalling legislators” who have the temerity to vote for laws the group doesn’t like, particularly ones that impose regulations on the purchase of firearms.

“We are currently providing overall monetary, legal, organizational, outreach and media support to several issue committees targeting key offenders for such recall,” the website says, but really it is after one man, State Senate President John Morse, who represents a district way over on the other side of the Rocky Mountains in the Colorado Springs area.

Mr. Morse’s offense was supporting laws after the Newtown massacre that expanded background checks to private and online gun sales and also imposed a 15-round maximum on most types of ammunition magazines.

that teabaggers have poked the hornet's nest by crying foul over being scrutinized. I hope it prompts investigations into RW 501(c)(4)s of all types, which will reveal that the lion's share of them are nothing more than money extraction devices for the sole purpose of furthering their political agenda.
