(345 posts)This really is the problem we now face in the state. We used to have time to prepare for storms that would form off Africa and take a couple of weeks to get here. Now they pop up in the Gulf or in the Caribbean and seem to be on us in no time. While it seems Andrea will only be a tropical storm, we've certainly had storms in the past few years that have become Hurricanes very quickly.
Also this only being day 5 of the season, I guess I'm inclined to believe that it will be very active season.

(135,060 posts)Weather alert: South Florida under a tornado watch
MIAMI HERALD STAFF REPORT
South Florida is under a tornado watch until 11 a.m. Thursday.
During the early morning hours, Miami-Dade was under a tornado warning, with a severe storm passing over the west-central portion of the county.
Thursday is shaping up to be a wet day, with roads already slick from a steady rain.
What a mess across South Florida, CBS4 meteorologist Lissette Gonzalez said on her Facebook page. Roads are drenched and dangerous and we have widespread storms soaking most of Broward and Miami-Dade.

<snip>
A house in the Orlando, Fla., area was evacuated when a large sinkhole developed in the backyard, swallowing the swimming pool, rescue workers said.
Orange County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Billy Richardson said the sinkhole developed while residents of the property in Winter Park were out, the Orlando Sentinel reported. He said by the time emergency workers got to the house at 8:30 p.m. Monday the hole was 40 to 50 feet wide and 30 to 40 feet deep.
"They came back from dinner and half the backyard was gone," Richardson said.
There were no signs of trouble Sunday when the owner, identified on county records as Suzanne Blumenaur, had a pool party, neighbors said.
Sinkholes are common in Florida where the limestone underlying most of the state dissolves, forming underground cavities. They are often covered with soil and vegetation that can collapse suddenly.
Fatalities are unusual. In February, a man disappeared when a sinkhole developed late at night under a home in Seffer near Tampa.
