Privilege

privilege
By Liberal Librarian 110 Comments

by @Lib_Librarian – Cross posted on The People’s View

As it has made it all over the media, last night at a Democratic fundraiser Michelle Obama was heckled by an activist from Get Equal, a gay-rights group. Ellen Sturtz interrupted Mrs. Obama’s speech, demanding that her husband sign an executive order guaranteeing non-discrimination in employment. Forget the fact that any executive order could be overturned by the next GOP president; and forget the fact that Obama has done more to advance gay rights in this country than all other presidents put together. Also forget the fact that rights which are enshrined by law—such as the lifting of DADT—are the rights which will last, not those done away with by executive fiat. No. To Ellen Sturtz, all of the President’s achievements are nothing, because he has made the strategic and democratic decision to work through courts and Congress to solidify gay rights. When George W. Bush signed executive orders, the likes of Ellen Sturtz would have called him a dictator. Now they want President Obama to be a dictator from the left.

But something strange happened. Mrs. Obama didn’t stand there and take her guff. She very politely offered those gathered a choice: they could listen to her, or they could listen to Sturtz. Suddenly, her bubble of privilege was punctured. She didn’t, in her wildest imaginings, think that Michelle Obama would actually stand up to her. She thought that because she had bought a $500 ticket she had the right to be rude to the First Lady, and to the other attendees who had bought their tickets to hear her speak. She was “taken aback” as she whined later at Mrs. Obama’s polite but forceful confrontation. She was quite ready to talk at Mrs. Obama; she was completely unprepared to be talked back to, as if she were the teacher and Mrs. Obama some unruly child.

Obviously, those on the Right who back the GOP, like the Koch Brothers, come from a place of ultimate privilege as scions of wealth. But a large segment of the Left also operates from that place. Ellen Sturtz is emblematic of that privilege: she thought that, simply because of who she was, she had the right to speak disrespectfully to Mrs. Obama. Forget that she is the First Lady; first and foremost she is a human being, with strengths and failings. The Right feasts on dehumanizing its opponents, painting them as Others; some on the Left fall into the same sin, believing that their worldview is the only correct one, and anyone who doesn’t agree with it is “uninformed” and must be taken by the hand and shown the truth. What Ellen Sturtz did last night is not see Michelle Obama as a woman, a mother, a wife, a strong supporter of equal rights for all; to Sturtz, Mrs. Obama was a cypher upon which she could load all her anger and ideology. She wasn’t a person, but a wall upon which she could post her theses. No wonder she was “taken aback” when the wall turned out to be a strong human being who had had enough of the disrespect shown to her, her husband, and her family for six years, much of that disrespect coming from people who were supposed to be allies.

Well done, Liberal Librarian!

That was the First Ladies topic.

To Ellen, they are nothing. Less than nothing.

Bad call on Stutz's part, alienating the very person that supports their cause for equality. The First Lady wants Equality for all, not just for one group, but for all people.

The voice that was speaking out for our children was being rudely drown out. Guess Ellen feels only her issues are important.

As I am of gay rights issues. I have always supported them. Many of my friends are gay.

I was introduced to my first gay couple when I was 5 yrs old. By my Parents, that was 55yrs ago.

However what I am saying is that there is a time and a place for everything. Sturtz's issues should not take over the conversation. This nation is not about meme. It is about all of us.

There is a time and place for everything, hers was not the time.

Why not go protest Boner and the pukes. Take the rallying cry to the people that ARE holding back progress. Why is that so hard?

Why scream in the faces of those supporting you, and not to the people that are not. Call me silly but I do believe it is congress that makes the laws.

Thats what she was protesting, that Obama still has not signed the executive order ensuring companies that do business with the federal government can not discriminate based on ones orientation that he promised to sign in 2008.

So once again, when is a good time to protest?

Edit: By the way please sign the petition urging him to follow through with his campaign promise if you have not done so already. You can find more information on it here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/113727661

Everything is not about Ellen Sturtz. The world does not revolve around her and her issues. The stop gap measure that she wants signed, would not be worth the paper when the next President walks in and flushes it.

This President works through the courts to make bills law. Ones like DOMA.

Ellen believes that the Plight of Inner City Children, and yes that was what First Lady was addressing, are nothing! Inner City Children do not concern Ellen. It's about her and her cause , or it's nothing.

Yes that was Privilege, her issues or nothing. Privileged and arrogant.

She was rude and disrespectful to a woman that actually does support equality for all. Her mistake.

decided that my full beard warranted a bit of heckling FROM the comedian.

So, he said, "Ah, Jesus! What do we have here? Fucking Moses." Got a fair laugh from the audience. I said, "Would you like me to part your waters?" I asked, in a stage voice so it could be heard. That got a much bigger laugh. The comedian left me alone for the rest of the evening.

One of the most influential women in America is the victim of privilege from a second class citizen?

You know, I don't agree with the heckling of the First Lady. Time, place, etc.

But the ideological contortions involved in trying to make one of the most privileged women in America some kind of victim are unbefitting of anyone who considers themselves a liberal and a Democrat.

Michelle Obama is just fine. She enjoys a rare place in our society none of us will ever touch.

Privilege. Jesus H. Grips are in want of getting. What a perversion of a very real issue. To twist it against an LGBT activist.

Yeah, I definitely see the privilege here.

I was initially not on the side of the heckler, but lord if an awful lot of privileged heterosexual commentators aren't pushing me there.

It reminds me of people talking down to women in general.

This is from the last paragraph~

People don’t like to be talked down to. The Obamas are no different. Which is why they and their real allies have all but tuned out the screechers on the Left. Obama knows he can’t rely on them; he also knows he doesn’t need to, as they’re probably the people who sat on their hands and didn’t go to the voting booths in 2008, 2010, and 2012. They won’t vote in 2014 either.
