(7,596 posts)A lot of people on this website seem to have a problem with Lincoln Chafee being a former Republican yet Warren, another former Republican, is a hero around here. I just don't know.

(45,319 posts)opposes the death penalty, and he is pro choice. I am fine with Lincoln becoming a Democrat, he has not been a Republican since 2007.
My objections have been to current and actual Republicans appointed to the administration such as Hagel who voted for the IWR, opposes marriage equality with a history of hate speech toward gay people, favors the death penalty and is extremely anti choice. I have problems with announcing that such a man is better than any Democrat, that only Republicans can be trusted with the military.
Note that Chafee is not appointed to anything, he has been too correct too often and must be punished, while those who said 'Yellow cake, shock and awe, aggressively gay' get handed the keys to the DOD.
Pretty easy to keep track of my views. Republicans are unacceptable even when pushed by their moderate centrist Democratic boosters.

(3,811 posts)She voted (along with Bernie Sanders and most other senators) for the comprehensive spending bill that included the notorious provision that garnered the bill the name "The Monsanto Act".
How long can she remain a voting member of the senate until her supporters are excoriated as "apologists," or "enablers," or any of the other invectives that some DUers use to harshly condemn anyone who dares to present a counter argument to some question or another that another DUer considers blasphemous?
Myanmar democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi was released from arrest and is now a member of her county's parliment. Her years of sacrifice and activism have already been discarded by some who are furious with her for working with people in the government who they dislike.

(3,811 posts)I'm a big fan of Elizabeth Warren and was thrilled when she was seated in the senate. I'd likely support her for president if she ran. I loathe Monsanto and am strongly opposed to policies that enable them or that favor chemical-intensive agriculture.
My point was that I believe that the demand for purity often gets out of hand here at DU -- and elsewhere also.
I completely understand arguing from principle. I have deep principles of my own. There are times when its necessary to recognize that the arguments are exhausted and an impasse has been reached and there is nothing left to say except that I disagree.
But it's my opinion that some DUers reach that point far too early in many discussions. They make too many false assumptions, use too much contemptuous language, and cut off debate prematurely.
Principles and ideals are deeply important, and yet dogma and ideology are enemies of insight and understanding. There's sometimes a line between righteousness and arrogance.
