(153,298 posts)the degree of idiocy in America is staggering

(153,298 posts)I used to date a guy 20 years ago who would tell me well over half of all Americans are f***ing idiots - now, reading their comments and seeing their hysteria over their perceived facebook friends, claiming they cannot keep up with family without it, watching people who have to check their phones 50 times during a movie, seeing people, sometimes whole families, going out to dinner and sitting there all glued to their handhelds - fuck, now I know he was correct.

(15,859 posts)It drives me absolutely nuts when someone comes over for a visit & spends half the time texting or talking on the phone. It seems like basic common courtesy is quickly becoming a thing of the past. I know some people who cant go more than a few minutes without checking their facebook page. And you wouldnt believe how many things weve miss because nobody calls people to invite them to anything anymore. I think its a matter of balance & too many people are way off.
the ones who cannot get off the phone long enough to simply ACKNOWLEDGE a clerk who is serving them? Or act like the waitress is interrupting their texting? F***!!!!!
Dont you just want to slap them? I was behind a woman the other day who actually just stood there at the counter carrying on her phone conversation. The clerk gave her the price and she just stood there yapping away not even getting out her money. The poor clerk was just standing there looking at all of us in line like WTF? She finally cleared the yappers sale and helped the person in line behind her. This, of course, caused the yapper to throw a fit because SHE was next in line. Said something to the person on the other end of the call about the clerk being a "rude bitch". HUH? It amazes me that some people can be so completely unaware of how they actually occur in the world. I would have sworn that we were all part of some sort of hidden-camera prank. It was unreal.

(24,899 posts)she refuses to own a smart phone, does not text, nor check for messages etc. You should hear the conversations with the phone company...."no, I only want a PHONE that I may use in the car for emergencies, or calling my folks and sister when we are out of town. No. I do not need to text. No, I do not need the internet on the road, we have maps...."
It's beyond ridiculous.

(4,835 posts)I've been just letting it go. One of these days I'm just gonna go off on them.
My younger brother (50 years old) is still waiting for Obama to find him a job. It's unfortunate when you get to my age and find out that your little brother is a conservative gun toting moron. I didn't even know he had any guns.

(7,099 posts)Giving a company information on your own accord is not the same as the government taking it under the guise of 'da war on terra'. I don't get people who act like if you're not living in a cave off the grid that you have no expectation of privacy anywhere doing anything.

There shouldn't be any expectation of privacy. Even email can be shared and should be carefully worded by the author.
Only a fool would share excessively private information.

(7,099 posts)So we should act like people with something to hide to avoid the intrusion of an agency trying to surveil people who have things to hide. That's like saying if I don't want to be on cameras everywhere I should wear a ski mask. Why should it be the problem of innocent people to have to hide from overreach?

(19,089 posts)You should still be able to expect privacy for those things you DON'T post online for the world to see ...
Using Facebook, Twitter and the like forces us to be careful about what information is exposed, but doing so should NOT imply that we have waived the right to maintain certain information private and away from prying eyes ...
Saying that the mere use of those social websites forces us to expect complete exposure off all of our secrets ... well ... that is a ridiculous assertion ...

(3,118 posts)- expressing the same concern. Don't expect privacy here, either.
One huge difference, those on FB have control on what postings, pics, comments others on the internet are able to see via privacy controls. There is no such option here. Of course, both places can be accessed by authorities should they wish.

(15,472 posts)it's the fact that Drones, omnipotent surveillance capabilities, and carte blanche authority without accountability, are the apparatus of a police state. Obviously people being able to discuss and criticize the functions of our government, in forum situations, shows that we are a free and democratic society, still we don't know who or what will govern us in twenty years .

(63,263 posts)If you're the person who has read every last word of their Terms of Service, then you'd probably be the first one in history to do so.
It would not surprise me to learn that Verizon's ToS include something along the lines of "user data shall be subject to reasonable review," which is about all they'd need in order to hand your entire call history to the NSA.
I recently had occasion to ask around two dozen people in my office if they'd read every word of their contracts w/ their cell providers. None had done so--myself included--and most hadn't read a word of their agreements outside of the net total fee per month.
Very little is done "wittingly" in our society, especially when it comes to reading 15 pages of 6-point-font legalese.
