School says grad can't wear Marine Corps uniform at graduation

A Conval Regional High School senior wants to wear his Marine Corps uniform at graduation instead of a cap and gown, but the school won't allow it.

Brandon Garabrant has a lot to celebrate. The 18-year-old graduates from boot camp on Friday at Parris Island, S.C. He will then fly home to New Hampshire for his high school graduation, where Brandon wanted to wear his new Marine Corps uniform.

"Brandon earned this right and he went above and beyond what he needed to do in high school," said his mother, Jessie Garabrant.

The principal sent an email to Brandon's mother saying the student council supports all students wearing caps and gowns as a celebration of their ConVal achievements with their ConVal class.

Wearing pins or cords representing other accomplishments is an option, but Brandon doesn't want his uniform under wraps.

Similar to how an Alabama school denied a diploma to a senior who wore a tribal feather to the grad ceremony. Let's see how many people in this thread are going to defend this NH school vs. the Alabama school that disciplined the Native American student. In fact the top comment in the WMUR site says:

As a Marine myself, I see his point, he is proud and doesn't want to cover his uniform. However I actually agree with the school. If they let him, do they then have to let boy scouts, girl scouts, and any other organization with a uniform also wear theirs without covering it up with the traditional cap and gown? This Marine should stand down and he should also clearly see the uniformity with all of them wearing a cap and gown. It's tradition and he should understand and respect that, especially as a Marine. Semper Fi to him!

The next comment says:

Get used to following the rules, Private. You got to wear your uniform when graduating from the Island and you will have plenty of opportunity at your next duty station. You will even reach the point when you will prefer to wear civies, believe me. There's a time and place for everything and high school graduation is for caps and gowns.

I found this story because it was on the front page of KTLKAM1150.com, the website of Stephanie Miller's flagship station, citing an article on The Blaze. (Yes that's the thing with Clear Channel radio websites: they all have this uniform "news" template that highlights stories from The Blaze.)

Mountains out of molehills. Let the boy wear his special outfit. I say let everyone wear whatever they want, in fact.

Maybe i should be disqualified since I didn't even go to my own graduation so that I could avoid all the piffle-paffle, pish-tosh, tripe and twaddle that pours forth from these weary lecterns. I myself would hardly be dissatisfied if I could not display my special vestments at such an already overly decorous and vestereal occasion, hence I find it difficult to take such a story seriously.
