Rand Paul planning class action lawsuit against surveillance programs

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said Sunday that he plans to file a class action lawsuit against the Obama administration for its unconstitutional surveillance programs.
On Fox News Sunday, Paul said he wants to get the support of 10 million Americans.
Im going to be seeing if I can challenge this at the Supreme Court level, Paul said, according to a rush transcript. Im going to be asking all the Internet providers and all of the phone companies, ask your customers to join me in a class action lawsuit. If we get 10 million Americans saying we dont want our phone records looked at, then somebody will wake up and say things will change in Washington.
Paul noted that public outcry over two pieces of legislation that raised Internet privacy concerns known as SOPA and PIPA proved very successful.

(28,627 posts)1. Rand Paul wasn't in Congress 10 years ago
2. It should have been stopped 10 years ago
3. BUT, he's a moron for wanting it to be stopped now?

(3,731 posts)but on this I'll say, yes, take this all the way to the SCOTUS and let the chips fall where they may, although it should have been stopped in it's tracks when it was first proposed.

(90 posts)I'm GLAD Senator Paul is doing this, it needs to be done and whatever
party it originates from is irrelevant. I just want it to freaking STOP.
Or am I wrong on this?

(100,139 posts)But I'm more than pissed off that he's pointing fingers at the wrong people over this. It's more manufactured anti Obama outrage.

(12,530 posts)Yes, Rand Paul is a shithead. Yes, Republicans in congress are guilty as sin too. And yes, Rand Paul is making a naked political play. But, at least it sounds like there's some political will to stop this, and raise a discussion of the issue. If it has to be a freaking 'bagger who does it for his own self-aggrandizing reasons, it's better than nothing. Many people here who have been defending this totalitarian spying program have sung the chorus, if you don't like the law, get it changed. Well, they should feel hopeful now, because this may be a vehicle to do exactly that. Obama really shouldn't have let a reptilian teabagger get in front of him on this.

(11,464 posts)Does Rand think Scalia, Thomas and the other three republican SCOTUS would agree with him?

(82,383 posts)Sounds like one of those ignorant people who doesn't know what a "class action" is.

(10,479 posts)and it is all blamed on Pres. Obama. Now nothing will be done in Congress until 2016. Rand Paul would sue Jesus if he thought he could get by with it. The Republicans will join him with delight. I don't know who started this but the scent of it yells Issa! The Republicans have thrown a single crumb to the media and the media will ask for the whole hog and probably get it and use it for themselves. And Candy Crowley will yet again be able to ask Issa -- What does your gut tell you? She opened up for Issa a way for him to lambaste the president. It was deliberate.

(100,139 posts)Of course he needs a running mate as bat shit crazy as he is, and the only man who can top that is Newt Gingrich. Maybe Michelle Bachmann as Secretary Of State.

(7,143 posts)A class-action with 10 million plaintiffs, none with standing, none with damages.
Will Glenn Greenwald call this "the most important civil rights case in iike evah"?

(100,139 posts)I'm royally pissed at the Republicans though. They blindly cheered for the Patriot Act and passed it unanimously. That included unlimited warrant less wiretapping. They could have prevented this. They're pointing fingers at the wrong people. They should be pointing fingers at themselves.

(3,539 posts)He is a man of power. Why he can have reporters necks stamped on.
If Rand Paul is gonna get his panties all in a bunch over this, why didn't he do it after his first job training session.
Or did the pansy ass find out about this by some amazing leak reported on by a conservative news source, just at the start of scandal season.
