What type of intelligence operations should the government be allowed to use for national security?

Recent events have shown that many on the board have a problem with the government use of phone data (phone calls, lengths of time of calls, etc) used for national security reasons. This is despite the fact that the data was attained by a warrant and any other use of the data would require further court approval. To me, that seems like a pretty good balance, at least when it comes to National security.

So the question is,if this is a problem, what should the government be allowed to do when it comes to national security?

We ask these people to violate the laws of Enemies and Allies alike. Hopefully we knew about Putin's' marriage troubles before he did. Just as we expect to know alot of details about the men with their fingers on the triggers of ICBM's aimed at us.

Should citizens be spying on their neighbors? Tapping each other phones?

The government should be bound, always, by the constitution. This should go without saying.

Keep data of who comes in and who goes out of the country. If someone comes in from outside over whom intelligence has a concern, then watch them like any detective and if the person provides probable cause then get a warrant. Same thing applies with domestic suspects. Good ole police work should be easier, not harder with new technologies. The program we have now is wrong on so many levels. ....
