What’s It REALLY Like Shopping With Food Stamps?

There is a lot of stigma attached to the term “food stamps.” For some, the words conjure up images of lazy slackers who refuse to take responsibility for their lives. For others, thanks to Reagan, they think of the stereotypical “welfare queen” with 10 kids, six identities and a Cadillac who’s gaming the system.

But for a few, those of us who have actually had to live the reality of shopping with food stamps, those words remind us of pain...

One commendable congressman from Oregon has admittedly never had to face such hardships, but he’s determined to understand them while shining a light on proposed legislation designed to cut 20% of funding from the SNAP (food stamp) program, making it even harder for struggling Americans to feed their families.

Watch Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) try to stretch the little over $30 he gets to spend on food for the week:

Cutting SNAP with unemployment so high is unconscionable. A lot of people aren't eligible for SNAP until their unemployment runs out, and now the Teabaggers want to jerk out that rug too. I haven't even tried to get SNAP, and I don't even know if I'm eligible, but I've been unemployed two out of the last three years myself.
