(14,910 posts)I will admit that I do not recognize the content of your posts based on your Username, however there are some prolific writers here at DU that does make it a little intimidating to submit OPs.
Your only complaint that you register is that you have been invited to few conversations...nobody is invited.
You are encouraged to submit your own thoughts and even more so to follow up those opinions. It makes us all more critical thinkers...
If you think that DU is abrasive, look around the internet. Youll find that DU is pretty even-keeled.
I'm not sure you can really appriciate everything that DU offers in less than 300 posts.
Best of luck!

(1,941 posts)Was expecting, based on experience at other sites, a lot more feedback from my comments. But it was pretty much ZIP, ZILCH, NADA, THE NULL SET.
I, too, thought about just leaving, but then I decided that I'd be better of it I just enjoyed the best aspects of the site, and pretty much forget any interaction.
And it's worked GREAT!
I come for the newsy aspect, choose the ones that appeal, will give a Rec if I really think it's worthy, and occasionally will post a comment (something I'm pretty sure in DU lingo is referred to as a "Kick" - as in "K & R" "Kick & Recommend" .
So my advice would be to enjoy the site for what IT has to offer, rather than what YOU would like it to be.

(6,829 posts)I write or post something I think is profound and will really get the DU crowd. Two days later maybe 2 recs and one response.
So I follow Frank Zappa's advice for a successful career
Step 1 - don't stop
Step 2 - keep going
I thought my posts would change the world and be somewhat entertaining at the same time. They don't and aren't, so my measure of a good post is my own internal system - did I research good, write good, use good logic, etc.
I'm still not yet changing the world on DU, but I am very well informed on the important issues of the day. I have not made any friends or close relationship in my time on DU. But I'm still here and still benefiting. I just haven't been solicited to come work for Jon Stewart's writing staff yet.
My hope is you stick around. Your participation will benefit both you and DU. In perhaps more indirect ways than you or I would like.

(22,271 posts)showed up on your thread. Just for the record, no one is "invited" anywhere on DU. You just have to just sort of plow your way through. I've written OP's that I spent days on researching and writing just to watch them sink to the bottom within an hour. I've also written OP's that I spent maybe 5 minutes on and they stayed up for days. You honest-to-goddess just never know. Stick around, learn something, participate when you want to and don't let anyone on DU, PARTICULARLY the assbites, intimidate you.

(21,020 posts)I don't think I've ever recommended a thread. I just don't do it. Not even the threads that start out with, "K & R if _______". In fact, especially not those threads.
There are probably others who don't rec threads, either.
That's one thing.
Another...I've been here a few years also, and have never been invited into conversations.
And there are times when I think I'm being particularly amusing or insightful and nobody replies. Oh well. Better luck next time, I always say.
So if you are intent on leaving because of things like that, I think you're giving up way too soon.

(9,288 posts)This is a large message board and I think you came into here with the expectations one would have if they only posted on small message boards with friends. That is not going to work.
If you want a lot of rec then the last thing you want to post is a insightful post. What you got to do is post flamebait. Divide the posters and then piss off one set while praising the others. For example, post a pitbull thread and make it extremely biased and insulting to those who don't agree with you. Or post an Obama is wonderful or Obama is just like Bush thread.
There you go quick cheap recs and long threads in which people talk past one and another. They don't help the community in any way (and are probably harmful overall) but they sure do get the replies. TBH this is true even on small message boards. Insightful posts or important stories are ignored, and controversy draws in all types of comments. Right now, if you want a bunch of recs just make a thread on the NSA or Snowden making some controversial remarks to piss people off. Throwing in a second controversial comment will get you even more replies. Something like "Snowden is a traitor and deserves the death penalty."
Tada, you now pissed off people on two different issues in a controversial way and get all the replies you seek. Extra points if you can make a comment about him getting shot with AR-15.
Of the over 500posts I have made only 2 were OPs so far and expected nothing from them. I got 1 reply on one and 2 on the other. I was quite happy about that. I don't come here seeking attention. On another message board I created threads that got lots of likes and others that got lots of replies, and I even posted a thread where I knew the sites developer would reply...and sure enough he replied and it became a monster of a thread with hundreds of responses. Its all about politics just like in real life.
I prefer to reply to others and if someone starts a conversation with me then I reply back if I am so inclined. If I don't get any responses I am still happy. I come here to express my view, vent my frustrations, and get news from a like minded audience. In that, im pretty happy.
Edit: It looks like you finally got all the conversation and recs you been wanting from this post. Why am I not surprised
