56. He was SO nice to me.
We butted heads a lot but he never was unkind or never declined an opportunity to try to understand, even if he could not. He was far fairer than I have ever been and he was very even tempered about everything. He always asked about personal things we had talked about, our mutual love of Broadway and music and he always asked about my horses. He knew how to be a kind person in the midst of all the shit stirring around here.
I do hope he is having a wonderful life. I miss him. It seems he was just gone one day and that has always concerned me. |

And when NanceGreggs and JeffR pretty much stopped coming by, too?
That's about the time FC stopped posting and I'd say many months, if not years, passed without a peep. When DU3 came about there was a resurrection of the Barack Obama Group and she started posting again. Never as much as back in 2007-2009, but it was good to see her again. There are a couple other groups that arose during that time, like Democrats for Progress, but I'm not sure if she posts much there or not. ![]() |

And it didn't stop even after President Obama was elected in 2008.
Not only were we monitored for posting in that group forum, we were trashed for posting in that group forum in other forums right here at the DU! That made no freaking sense to me. But, worse than that not only were we trashed for posting in the BOG group forum at the DU, some of them went to other forums and to Facebook and trashed us there, too. Some of those same people that were trashing us back then are the very ones whining the loudest now about the spying that the NSA is doing. Ironic, isn't it? |

63. DAMN that was a great thread. SO eloquent, that OP.
Thanks for re-posting it, lumberjack-jeff!
For me it helps to remember. It helps to put a few things into perspective. I think the very monumental growth spurt in our nation's maturity. Seems to me we're kind of an adolescent or teenager country now, compared to the "adults" and other "elders" in the room. Meaning the European nations with their cultures over a thousand years or more, and certainly Japan and China, around for thousands of years. The Jewish collective stretches over several millennia. Our history is a big ol' whoppin' 230-some years long. We're barely out of the high chair compared to many. Historically, to quote Joe Biden, it indeed was/is a "Big Fuckin' Deal!" Whatever else he does, Barack Obama tore down that "Berlin Wall" in our country's evolution. The last wall to be broken through is for women. But Obama created an entrance for non-whites. I'm still proud I contributed to that in all the ways I did. Granted, there's all the other stuff swirling around now. But hey - how "great" would things be now, given the issues now - if the republi-CON mindset had been in charge instead? God forbid! And thank God that God did. ...just rambling for a moment. Sorry... |

75. God didn't do it. Voters did.
They picked a person warts and all. Better than the alternatives, but still a person with all the questionable agendas and a limited ability to get it done.
The disillusionment with BO is due to the complete lack of critical thinking that some people applied to the job of "voter". They decided that they knew what he was going to be about by looking at him and seeing a faint halo... yet disregarding everything he said and everything he did. Their expectations were so high as to be unattainable, so when the pony didn't materialize, they simply disengaged. Obama raised a billion dollars in campaign contributions in 2012, but unlike 2008, he didn't raise it from the little people. It's been a few years since I've used this quote, but now it seems apropos again. “To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.” - Theodore Roosevelt |

78. How would one constructively criticize a president who collects the metadata on all your calls...
and diverts and stores all your emails?
What's the constructive criticism here? The only good-faith explanation he could have provided is; "oopsie. I forgot that switch was turned on". He has done the opposite, and aggressively prosecuted those who blew the whistle. To a people who fancy themselves citizens of a nation of laws, is either acceptable or it is not. The person sitting in the chair is irrelevant. |

I actually went into the old AAIG (African American Interest Group) on DU2 and there were names there I have not seen in years. Frequent, regular posters that don't post here anymore. I got in touch with one who posts on another web site and he said there was no way in hell he'd post here anymore. I can't say that I blame him. Shoot, I did a roll call thread of black posters about a year or so ago and easily 1/3 of them don't post here anymore either. ...I do think it has become very divisive. The President has a lot of supporters. Some might call them fans. He can do no wrong. He is our quarterback.
And there are some oldtimers that fought George W Bush and Dick Cheney for eight long years and they cannot possibly accept the Bush policies in any form and they are disappointed in Barack Obama in that respect. These are the most loyal Democrats you will find anywhere. So there is a present battle going on for the soul and mind of the democraticunderground. |

The dumb, star-struck "fans" and the committed-loyal democrats who are righteous beyond measure.
That's precisely the kind of stupidity that loses us some of our best posters, and many of them posters of color. Yet some of them were Eddie fans or Julian fans or Bradley fans right off. At least the President has been known for a long time, yet they were calling Eddie a hero instantly.
And some of them are fans of Elizabeth Warren. I guess they think she will have the "backbone" to disband the CIA. Bet they would be wrong. |

Last edited Wed Jun 19, 2013, 11:45 PM - Edit history (1) The problem is that this site is called "Democratic Underground", not Obama's fan club, or Hillary's, or Biden's, etc.
She posted beautiful threads and lovely pics, but couldn't tolerate anything negative being said about Obama. I haven't visited her new site, but I doubt that dissent is allowed there. Obama is no longer a candidate, but president. He's enduring the same kind of criticism that all presidents do. Clinton was trashed on a daily basis, so was Bush and so was everyone who came before them. It comes with the territory. ![]() |

133. +1
This is my attitude as well. I'm heartened by criticism of a Democratic politician on Democratic, liberal and/or progressive boards. That is as it should be. There is no way to progress socially without questioning our leaders - ALL of them. The greatest women and men in political and world history have been dissenters at some point in their lives. Unfortunately, in 2008 a certain contingent of people felt that we needed to protect certain Democratic politicians to present a united front. I have always felt that to be narrow and backwards thinking.

134. I think that some people became emotionally invested with Obama.
To these people any criticism of him is abhorrent, but being president is not being a movie star or a famous singer. All presidents need their feet to be held to the fire, even the ones from one's own party.

They were wise beyond their years.
And I'm not just saying that. They were 2 of my favorite members. There were times when I would read what they had said, and I would wish that I could write stuff like they did. Then other times they would write and say stuff that I hadn't even thought of. And that is why we need more women in Congress!! Intelligent women like those 2 should be in positions of power instead of the thundering dunderheads that are in control of the House today. |

54. I really hate revisionism.
If FrenchieCat has left, I hope she's enjoying whatever she's chosen to do. But the crocodile tears over the deplorable current state of DU discourse ring false, particularly from people who should remember what it was like to be a Hillary supporter (or a supporter of anyone other than BO, for that matter) and the people who were responsible for it.
DU2 sucked, and the ability of a vocal group to shout down dissent by appealing to their mods was a primary reason. Absent that ability, the cool kids simply lost interest. |

62. I feel your pain
![]() I came late to the Obama party, having first supported Edwards, then Hillary. I live in California, where despite our enormous population our primary election doesn't count for shit because the presidential nominee is pretty much settled by the time we get to vote. However by that time I had read Obama's first book, and I liked his bio and the way he thinks. Everybody has a bias and I have been clear about mine: You Mainlanders have no idea how Hawai'ian this man is, and what a different culture that denotes. I'm half a generation older than he is, but I was raised on Oahu, went to public schools, and like his parents, graduated from the University of Hawai'i. The aloha his grandparents had for Hawai'i, despite their personal struggles, having come from someplace so different, resonates with my own parents' reaction and the aloha they felt. The slight sense being an outsider to the majority culture, of being always seen as a newcomer, somewhat paralleled mine, as neither of us looks in the slightest like a Polynesian or Asian, and after awhile it wears on you. What I got from DU was that so many people felt cognitive dissonance. They thought they saw a black man acting white, but what they were seeing was a hapa-haole Islander who could have chosen to stay and marry a local girl and join the melting pot. But he didn't. He chose a different identity, and I do mean he chose. I go from that bio, and it does not mean I "worship" Barack Obama. It does mean I feel affinity. That affinity includes my bias toward intellectuals who don't talk down to the public. Gotta go -- my timer just went off... |

116. I must have had more run-ins with Nance
I thought FrenchieCat was great, and even told her so.
Maybe it helps if you are on the same side, because I was always a Hillary-hater. And then for two years - from 2008 to 2010, I was an Obama defender (or tried to be). Then Obama crossed my Rubicon - he extended the Bush tax cuts, and instituted an accursed payroll tax cut, and started (actually continued) to preach Reaganomics (tax cuts (for the rich, which the politician calls middle class tax cuts or small business tax cuts) will create jobs!!!). Doubtless there were many posts that I never saw, many flame wars I never got singed by. It was funny how perceptions changed though. When I was an Obama defender, it seemed like the Obama attackers were rude as hell, calling us Obamabots, DINOs, lovers of Bush, sensible woodchucks, etc., etc., etc. even using that as an icon. Then when I switched though, it seemed like the Obama defenders were the obnoxious ones. Calling us firebaggers, closet racists (as if the same people didn't also hate the white Bill Clinton), etc. It's always more serious when your own eye is the one getting poked. |

I just came out of a thread where some mindless person said that a thread accusing the president's detractors of disliking him because he's black are the reason there are so few minority posters here. I've never seen such a stupid statement here and that is truly saying something.
I personally don't agree with that thread but one thing I've noticed is that there are more than a few remaining black posters posting in it that agree with the OP's thesis. The hyperventilating, knee jerk response to that thread is the one that many black posters are avoiding. I think there is alot of truth in what Nance said. |

that drove people off DU show up.
Look, I make no secret about what I felt about Hillary Clinton, nor what i will feel about her in the Democratic primary. I make no secret about the fact that if she wins, I work to get her in. Beacool and I have had this discussion many times, and I think she realizes that if HRC wins, we will both be doing what we can, despite heated disagreements in the primary season. That being said, I do remember people calling anyone who opposed Hillary sexist. I also remember ageism being thrown about, and all sorts of nasty vitriol. Up until the 11th hour, there were calls to punish us for daring to question if Hillary would be the one. I do not apologize for the fact that given a choice between Hillary and Obama, I chose Obama, despite the fact he did not make the left turn that this country needed, the left turn Hillary made it clear she would not take. Sorry to say, comments like her "we came, we saw, he died"comment about Gaddafi have not done anything to convince me that she learned any lessons; experience does not always mean you do not enjoy repeating the same mistakes, especially when you never thought they were mistakes. However, my disagreements about Hillary do not mean I think her supporters are bigots/scum. |

106. That comment was taken out of context.
CBS was interviewing her and asked her if her trip to Libya a mere three days prior to Gaddafi's death was the reason he was captured. Hillary was being sarcastic when she responded the way she did. She was implying that the idea that her presence in Libya had anything to do with Gaddafi's death was preposterous. Anyone who knows her, recognized it for what it was. That exchange was off the record, but Hillary's response made it to the internet. The reporter's question is never fully shown.
This is the only clip I found that shows more than just her now infamous remark. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20123348-503544/clinton-on-qaddafi-we-came-we-saw-he-died/ |

130. Guessing, till she tells us, but for myself,
I post less here because I post less and say less generally.
I used to get into battles, but have learned not to get baited into wasting my time, mostly. Because of twitter and facebook, there are other ways to communicate that didn't exist before. Neither of those or anything else will replace DU for me. I appreciate DU as a left-leaning news aggregator, with great info in various fora that I still make lots and lots of time for and find irreplaceable. Yes, DU has been infiltrated by assholes, and lots of wingers, in my opinion, wasting our time running us down and trying to demoralize us. I just don't have time for it, so I don't post a lot. I'm still here though, and I bet Frenchie is too. |
