The government of the island-nation confirmed that they got the notification from Hrafnsson. However, a meeting has so far been declined, according to Iceland Review.
The same day as Hrafnsson sent the plea on behalf of the American whistleblower, he also requested a meeting with Icelands Prime Minister Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson and the Interior Minister, Hanna Birna Kristjansdottir.
Neither of them was able to meet with me even though they realized what my request was about. I made sure that both of them were given the necessary information about his plea for help, the WikiLeaks spokesperson stated.
He was later informed by the ministries that under the law, a person applying for political asylum in Iceland must actually be in the country.

(Reuters) - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange says he will not leave the sanctuary of the Ecuadorean Embassy in London even if Sweden stops pursuing sexual assault claims against him because he fears arrest on the order of the United States.
...
"I wouldn't say I wouldn't leave," he said. " But) my lawyers have advised me I shouldn't leave the embassy because of the risk of arrest in relation to the risk of arrest and extradition to the United States."
When asked whether he would remain inside even if Sweden dropped the investigation against him, Assange said: "That's correct."

Ecuador has granted Assange political asylum and allowed him to shelter in its embassy, but Britain has made it clear he will be arrested if he tries to leave the embassy, which is heavily guarded by police.

(36,974 posts)IF Congress would let President Obama empty out GITMO.
All of the military could leave and on the way out they could put the key under the front door mat.
Then when all the 'leakers' need a place to 'hide out' they could just go there.
Edited to change the word 'whistleblowers' to 'leakers'
since Snowden is a criminal leaker and not a true whistleblower.

(62,325 posts)begging from him. People should avoid judging others by their own standards. Iow, you and he, and me, I am not very courageous which is why I admire those who are. He is apparently willing to die for his country. There seem to be more and more people of conscience risking everything over the past decade. And it more than likely there will many more. When things were allowed to get this bad, back during the Bush years, even Republicans, like Comey and Ashcroft, became concerned.

(1,881 posts)who can judge by your own standards?

(62,325 posts)are assuming he 'will beg for mercy' I am assuming you are projecting what you would be doing in a situation such as his. Thus the 'judging by your own standards' comment.
He is far more courageous than you, if I am correct in my assumption. He is also far more courageous than I am. Which means my standards similar to yours, not his. I would not have his courage either.
You said whistleblowers are courageous, Snowden won't be begging, and people shouldn't be judging others by their own standards.
Whatever.
ROFL.

(9,688 posts)He's fully explained that he knows the odds against him. Yet he did it, whereas you....? You talk about "courage"?
railsback
(1,881 posts)I'm assuming that you, too, are a whistleblower to render such judgements based on your own experiences.
