One of my co-workers a friend for nearly a decade is a former illegal immigrant who is now a citizen

51 years old, two sons, one who moved back to Columbia, the other staying here with Mom and Dad. He became a citizen last year. We were talking a few minutes ago about the Republican efforts to "fuck with" (as he put it) immigration because it was on one of the TV's here. He said the ONLY reason they are trying to INCREASE border security is to reduce the number of immigrants who would vote Democratic. Nothing more.

He said (quote) "I'd not fucking vote for a Republican if they threatened to take my citizenship away". "They think we are stupid, we know better."

I never thought of it that way, but I had the luck of being born here I didn't have to work for it.

Republicans, slowly being flushed down the toilet of history. Nothing they do is beneficial to any one but them.

Have a great day.

open the flood gates for hispanics to vote for republicans. I mean how stupid do the think hispanics or any minority group would vote for them. They will have to get rid of the extreme right or they will keep losing hispanic votes. If people would take the time to stop and be in someoneelses shoes maybe things would be different.

Because the Democrats "gave them their citizenship" perhaps? That's basing votes on the offer of a bribe.

Rejecting that argument? Well by his own statement your friend is refusing to vote for Republicans because they "tried to take his citizenship away." In other words they didn't bribe him, so they lost his vote.

Don't feel bad, though, because that's pretty much the way all American's vote. "I voted for Blah because he lowered my taxes."

This is the century of "It's all about me."

The quote was

"I'd not fucking vote for a Republican if they threatened to take my citizenship away."

There was an implied "even" before it.

He thinks Republicans think he is stupid (presumably because they do).

You might want to edit your post and apologize.

Congratulations!!! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

My big news is trying to wrap up tracking 271 kids for Preemie Growth Project; we will have good data on approximately 160 of them, and it looks like 4 out of 5 saw "good results" with 3 out of those 5 seeing AWESOME results. A couple have been posting some really amazing things, but sadly, it is the ones we weren't able to help that are still breaking my heart. I am trying to take the breaths necessary for getting excited about the next steps, but am feeling a little burned out...sigh. Also, we have some family drama that is just draining me.

But I am very happy for you - !!!

Refusing to vote for Republicans if "they threatened to take my citizenship away" would be both wrongheaded and rather silly because a) elections are not about "what's in it for "me" and b) there is no mechanism in this country for taking anyone's citizenship away from them.

Republicans have never threatened to disenfranchise anyone who is presently a citizen and if they did make such a threat anyone who believed it would be very silly indeed because it simply cannot be done.

I am a long time Democrat, have voted Democratic for most of my life, supported and voted for Obama twice, fully support immigration reform, and have a niece who is Hispanic, an immigrant and a naturalized citizen. I also recognize bullshit when I see it and call foul on the bullshitter.

Voting should be based on what is best for the nation, not on selfish self interest.

is what you seem to be missing.

He won't vote for Republicans EVEN IF they threaten to take away something he values.

He knows they think he is STUPID because only STUPID people would vote for "Republican Values" which don't take care of ALL of the people in this country, but only the richest 2%.

The man isn't selfish, and your post is either a simple misinterpretation, or an excuse to pontificate (which is what a message board is all about, so have at it!).

I also disagree with "best for the nation" but that is a discussion that belongs on another thread.

First. the quote is "I'd not fucking vote for a Republican if they threatened to take my citizenship away."

So he didn't say "even if" and I'm trying to figure out why you assume that such is implied. That phrase implies that the action it qualifies is something which would reverse the stated decision. "I would not date her even if she was the only girl on the planet" implies that under most circumstances I would date the only girl on the planet.

Saying that "I'd not fucking vote for a Republican even if they threatened to take my citizenship away." implies that under normal circumstances I would vote for someone who "threatened to take my citizenship away," but since the Republicans are so awful, even if they did that I still won't vote for them.

Do you see why I find your repeated insistance that he implied "even" when he didn't say it to be so confusing? It utterly reverses what he actually said.
